It's bad enough having the inflight AWACS display, but combined with the 5 mile icons it means you can ACM at ridiculous ranges.  Fights are too spread out - everything is done at arm's length.  If you read or hear the words of WW2 fighter pilots, you find they had to get in fairly close to get ID.

I agree icons are useful to overcome technical limitations, but I doubt even Chuck Yeager could do IFF and discern range within 100 yards from 5 miles away.  Maybe start the range number at 4.5k, and give type ID at 2.5k?

These two things('cause events are starting up) are the only two reasons I don't bother flying online.  Get rid of em or at least make another arena available without them, please.

Agreed Funked!

Friendly icons at 2.0
Enemy plane type at 1.2 would give you both a range est, and what your up against.

Forget range indicators for enemy's other than above.

Do it in the SEA if you like, if you build it we'll come.

Ohh and 2 sided Axis vs Allied please!

Never liked the sooo distant icons. I agree - shorten the range up some. It adds tension to the simulation as every dot could be an enemy.

At least bring them in a little and see how people adjust.

A definite yes for this one.. 1.2k for enemy icons? That'd give enemies about 2 seconds to react to a diving Tiffy... muhahaha!

Friendly icons need to stay distant (4k?) though... irritating when you can't find friendlies, and would be maddening if you lost an enemy spit only to aquire a friendly spit and end up pursuing him by mistake...

Here we go again.

There have been LOTS of threads on this and a lot of really good ideas.

I'm sure not going into it in detail again, but I'll toss out two things.

Obviously you should be able to tell a fighter from a bomber faster than the current dot setup allows.

You ABSOLUTELY DO NOT need range info once at a range where current technology allows you to visually ID planform and type. Perhaps around 1K all you need is a red or green "friend or foe" dot, no range, no big icon. Just the shape and a dot to tell you if it's OK to kill him.

Thank you. Feel free to continue beating this poor old horse. We need to convince HT, not each other.
If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude than the animated contest of freedom, go from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains sit lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen!

I like them the way they are. At off hours is hard enough to find a fight.

Easymo if you can't find a fight with the in-flight AWACS and the jumbo-size "dots for the visually impaired", then you can't find a fight, period!

I'm going to agree with easymo.  This is my first online flight sim and I have a low grade system that I find hard to ID targets.  I tried toggling icons off and cannot fight that way.
I'm open to suggestions but I do not want to get rid of icons.

Skernsk, RTFM, I am not proposing to eliminate icons.  I just want them adjusted to make it a little more like WW2 than WW3.

Two things that need to go before this game becomes as enticint as it has a potential to become:
A) Long range icons ( d 15 is far enough. No need for D60 )
B) inside D10 rangefinder accurate to the yard.
