And don't forget the 109 and 190 had electric props. So if you lost electric power you were S.O.L.
Pitch trim on the 190 was also electric. Gear was electric too, but I think there was a manual override. In any case 190 pilots preferred to do dead stick landings with the gear up. It seems the plane was easier to land with no landing gear.
