Eagler - my 1972 1200 Beetle doesn't even have reverse lights - see pic. Are you sure your son's car has them? Could it be that modified light clusters have been used, with some clear glass for the reverse lights, but with no reverse lights present? I did once have a car like that - opened up the rear light cluster and doh! -no bulbs present, and wiring not completed. :(

Lugnut - you are right. There are so many ways to evaluate "best". It might be fast, good looking, well built, reliable etc. Of course, on an individual basis, Beet1e's were not the best. In many ways they were crap!

Beetle... The U.S. did not have tail light units like that after 1967.  The "drop" was replaced by tailights like the bug in Eagler's picture up until the early 70's, then by much larger round tailights.

Eagler... the Volkswagen did very well in the NTHS safety tests in the 70's.  The only real issue noticed was the legendary footage of a bug rear-ending a pinto in these tests.  The license plate bolts of the bug penetrated the fuel tank and caused a small explosion and fire.  The Bug received among the highest marks for being rear-ended and rear-ending someone.

The only real thing I'd stress with a volkswagen is ensuring there is adequate protetion to keep the rear seat from shorting out the battery when someone sits in it.  Take a look at the setup and you'll see what I mean.

Nice beetle Eagler
Ur son will love it :D

Rust mostly appears under the doors(dorpels)
check near engine to where the heater inlet pipe is montaged

On that picture the beetle looks fine dough

American beetles also had other bumpers than the europe ones.
wich are safer
U can replace the tank in front for a plastic one.

Good luck with that car

About 15 years ago a friend was leaving the state.  He sold me his car for $100.  A week later, after investing about $400 in plywood, lexan, house paint, etc., I pulled this beauty out of the garage:

Since were all talking about our rides.. I was one of those Kids where the parent shouldn't have given them a HP car.  This was a 77' Pony...  She was a hot little ride 93-95 in high school I loved to prey on those civics and other rice rockets..Thos she didn't make it to my freshman year of college I wrecked her.. and was a total loss    I have to say it was a great car..now I cruse around in a 2000 Rodeo and soon to be a 2002 R/T Stratus Coupe..

Be sure that it´s with the 1,8 TURBO engine. After that SKY is the limit to those HP´s (and our WALLET of course). :D

Doh!  Liquid cooled engine at the wrong end!

As a driver of the classic Beet1e, whenever I pass another Type 1 (air cooled beet1e) or Type 2 (air cooled kombi bus), I will wave to the other driver and he/she will wave back. I even got waved by a Karmann Ghia driver and passenger one time. The common denominator is air cooled. Sometimes, a guy or lady will wave to me from one of these new Beet1es and, being a terrible snob, I do not wave back. I might just nod or smile (if I fancy the girl driving - there's a girlie round here who drives a blue one, and hasn't yet learned the VW protocol).

But admittedly, the new beetles look nice, airy and plenty of head room. And I bet they wont be prone to rust like the old ones.

Mine is still in the shop :( Getting ready to part with £3800 (about $5000 or 5000 Euros) when it's finished.

I have an important question for you Beetle guys: What grade of fuel do you run on? In the UK, we've gone pretty much to Unleaded since about 10 years ago. But you can buy LRP lead replacement petrol. That's what I use, because although the ignition timing might be suited to unleaded, I don't know if the valve seats of the engine are hard enough to make it with unleaded. By the way, we're supposedly self sufficient in oil here in the UK, but the Government taxes road fuel to such a degree that it's the most expensive in the world - it works out to about $1.10 per litre. Thank you, Tony Blair.

I use 20w/50 mineral oil

don't use thinner synthetic oil

Oil from STP is very good
or Miller's classic oil
