TANKS and LAND WARFARE
« on: July 06, 2002, 04:18:59 AM »
Flight is excellent in AH.Tanks is a different story.Pretty useless as they are. They must be faster 2X or 3X ,better climbing the hills.
Terrain also no good for land battles.
As a model compare with PC game by SSI Panzer commander.
HT cant we have smthing like that for landwarfare???
What are your opinions ...ideas???

Speeding up tanks is an incredibly dumb idea, a panzer going 50-70mph? LOL  Though, Hill climbing should possibly be better, especially with the exaggerated nature of AH terrains.

Weren't the SSI games turn based strategy games?

Have you been using the directional takeoffs with vehicles?  It plants you almost right on top of the adjacent field...

Well I feel that driving tanks takes years!!in AH!!OK the shortcut helps a lot but is it realistic??
Yes SSI does excellent strategy games but this one was a tank sim.Marvelous game imho ,with editor too.It had a much better feeling than landwarfare here.

Maybe it's not realistic, but it saves a lot of driving time which would be needed otherwise - a concession to gameplay.  :)  It's not like the spawn points are right at the remote fields, there is usually still some way to go to reach them.

ITS ACES HIGH not ACES LOW.....LOL....just my two cents....

Actually I like the GV stuff but tanks could climb a little faster....spent 45min yesterday doing 3mph getting up a hill only to be whacked but a guy just camped waiting for me as I crested the hill.....oh well....still fun though....

Did WWII tanks have support vehicles to transport them around long distances lilke modern tanks? if they did that would explain remote spawn points its where they dropped the tanks off ready for the assault.

tip: you can get up steeper hills in reverse

also tank battles around edge of new map are fun. not many planes to break up the fun :D

The terrain in the new map definitely needs to be made a little more "ground vehicle friendly" so that I'm not spending half an hour trying to get up one boulder-covered hill.

Maybe you should pick your fights better instead?

Or choose vehicles better...last time I checked M8s and M3s were faster than Osties and pzIV:s.

But on the other hand, the ground aspect of AH needs many changes. I think they will come in 1.11 though. I have faith :)

The Germans had a whole fleet of flatbed train cars that they hauled divisions around france/germany/poland to where they wanted.

Panzers SELDOM did overland travel because the railroad was so much faster, more effecient. Burned less fuel etc. The exceptions were from the roadhead to battle front etc.

Also the Maquis, and free french underground did a LOT to hamper the free flow of men & material to normandy. Without them they may have pushed us back into the sea.

Unfortunately, the development of the ground game has lagged significantly behind the air game. If you can dig up a copy of Panzer Elite, I recommend it highly. It will teach you very quickly that you don't just go barrelling over the hill; you sneak up, bring yourself in hull-down, with just your turret exposed, then look for and take out anyone perched to snipe you before you advance over the crest. It would be useful if there were a 'slew turret to commander's facing' so that you could unbutton and search for targets from the commander's cupola and swing the turret to face that direction without having to be down in the turret doing it, though.

There is of sorts. You can use the mg position (commander's?) and when you switch to the main gun it is already slewed to the same spot.

thank Ghosth, I knew someone would know about the flatbeds,

and Shiva as AKIron said sit in the pintle MG (top of turret default key 3) aim at target and then enter main gun (default key 2) and you should be aimed strait at the same target.

No Hortland.  I pick my fights just fine.  In the new map the terrain is just too rugged around many of the vehicle spawn points, which naturally inhibits the ground game.  And I absolutely refuse to give up my Ostie! :)   It's not as fast as a halftrack or armored car, but it does have that lovely rapid-fire 37mm that lets you engage both air and gv targets effectively.

I bet HTC does provide a noticeable upgrade to the ground aspect of the game in 1.11.  They've done a great job of progressively upgrading everything and they certainly can't do it all at once.

I'd also like to see an improvement in ground warfare as well. As it is, most people spend their time in the air, but a few of my friends and I tried taking a base tonight in tanks only, with the help of outsider bombers. We tried and tried, and didn't get anywhere, even though we spent 80% of our time driving there. Anyways, I'd like to see less rugged terrain in maps, and more options for planes to carry vehicles. It'd be very nice to see a goon "lay" a tank on the ground as it swoops by the ground. Vehicles shouldn't be much faster, but bases being closer together wouldn't hurt. See ya.
