Ok, I know nothing about the new .205 bird.  Can somebody enlighten me?  What plane would it be comparable to that I would know about?  What are it's strengths/weaknesses?

Oh, and what armament does it have?

Think K1-61, with two cannons.

The Macchi(pron.: Makkee) Mc205 was one of the best fighter of the Regia Aeronautica (Italian Royal Air Force).
Basically he was a Macchi 202 fitted with the DB605A engine and 20mm cannons and entered in service in sept. 1942.
Armament was 2x12.7mm Breda machine guns in the cowling, firing throug the spinner, and 2x20mm MG151 in the wing roots.
The powerfuller engine exalted the excellent maneuverability of the airframe and added high climb capability.
I don't have the complete flight data, I can only report the followings: top speed 642 km/h @ 7200m, time to 6000 m full ammo &  100% fuel 5'30", max g-load +/- 15g, max dive speed 960 km/h.
As to the flight characteristics, I can only report what I read on many books.
I know that only true data counts, but at least it's possible to have an idea on the behaviour of this plane.
He could fly like a 109, with a better overall maneuverability: it seems he could turn with Spits and P38.
For sure all the pilots were enthusiastic about the plane, wich allowed them to fight on equal ground with every allied plane.
It was lethal below 7000m, above this limit the performances decreased.

-kier-,

You can actually compare the Ki-61 with the 109F or the Macchi C.202.
The Ki61 was powered by a 1,175hp Ha-40 engine, the japanese built version of the DB601A.

The C.205 has a license built 1,450hp DB605A1 engine with the GM-1 injection.
Performance are slightly better than those of the 109G-2. She's a mid 1943 baby, her foes were SpitV, SpitIX, P38F-J, P-51 and P-47.

Gatt

"And one of the finest aircraft I ever flew was the Macchi C.205. Oh, beautiful. And here you had the perfect combination of italian styling and german engineering .... it really was a delight to fly ... and we did tests on it and were most impressed." - Captain Eric Brown

Think Niki, same turn but faster and better climb, less firepower and a German DB engine.

P.S. This is according to R/L figures.

How should it handle in a dive, and at high speed?  Roll rate, stick forces, etc.
