When the reports about the missing girls were first circulating I told the wife it was someone that lived nearby. It turned out to be a neighbor.
This guy was a suspect early in the hunt, but the FBI couldn't really do much because all they really had to go on was some allegations by one of the girls prior to the disappearance that he had assaulted her.
One body was found in his shed and the other was found burried below his newly poured concrete patio.
Its just odd... the FBI strongly suspected him, the families strongly suspected him, hell... everyone strongly suspected him. Still... the FBI was worried that if they searched his place without enough information pointing to him that they would blow the case.
I guess I commend their patience. I'd like to say that they did a great job investigating, but it took yet another rape for the man to be turned in by his son (it was the son's girlfriend).
I watched a movie about the serial killer in the U.S.S.R. that killed some 50 people and remember the investigator saying "I hope another body turns up with more evidence". Its sad to see our own F.B.I. relegated to saying the same thing. Fortunately, the last body that showed up was still breathing.
Its really quite an odd scene all the way around.
