Experimental Scoring System - Friday TOD
« on: September 19, 2002, 10:40:02 AM »
I'm gonna try out a spiffy little scoring system to give you guys a "winner" since it's important to some of you.  ;)  (you know who you are!)

The problem we used to have with scoring on straight points is that it just wasn't balanced unless we gave each side the exact same targets to hit (e.g. hit the carrier, hit the small airfield) and that just wasn't very much fun to design, nor fun for you guys to fly in.  The points scheme really fell apart with the BoB TOD I ran as the RAF had no land/sea targets to hit.

So objective scoring became our focus.  However, that still didn't work out well with the BoB syndrome.  You needed to reward the defenders somehow.

So what I came up with is that each target is worth X amount of points.  The X points are split between the defenders and the attackers based on the damage done to the target.  Example, Strike A1, fighter hangars and ammo bunkers, worth 200 points.  If the attackers achieve 75% of that objective, they get 150 points and the defenders get 50 points.  50% and they both get 100 points (draw for that objective.)  25% and the defenders get 150 points and attackers 50 points.

After the frame, I will visually assess the targets with the CM eye (don't worry, rebuild time will be set to something insanely high, if you destroy it, it will not rebuild before the frame is up) to get an approximate score for each target.  I will then add up the raw scores for each side.  To encourage (well, reward) surviving, I will multiply the scores by a factor for surviving planes to get the final score.  (I haven't figured out this factor yet, I want to reward landing successfully more than ditching more than bailing more than being captured more than dying.)  The final score determines who wins the frame.  Best 2 out of 3 frames wins (or we can just do a total points to see who wins.)

In Frame 1, all targets will be worth the same amount of points.  In future frames, I will probably make the points worth more for the Primary target.   (example, taking a German convoy might be more important than the German vehicle base in a later frame and worth more points.)

I'm going to do this by hand (well, more than likely using Excel or something), but if it goes well, we might try to get Gremlin to automate this down the road.

For Frame 1, there are 5 targets: 3 attacks by the Allieds, and 2 attacks by the Axis.  We'll just go with 200 points per target, so 1000 points are up for grabs to be split by the sides (destroy your targets and protect the areas targeted by your enemies for max points).  Then I'll adjust the scores for the survivability factor (so that means kill lots of bad guys and live for a better score!)  I'll have the results posted on Monday or Tuesday.

Just wanted to give you a heads up to fly to live, accomplish your objectives, and look forward to an actual score and frame winner come next week!  :)
