Too bad it keeps getting its butt kicked by the yellow GMIS Corvettes in the American Le Mans Series races.  And next year the Nissan Z will be joining the crowd, with additional commitments by Ferrari, Stryker, and Saleen (all entered this year but haven't been factors).

Dont know much about racing or the Le Mans, but are those stock production cars in that race?

But its getting a bit long in the tooth, isn't it do for a redesign?

I think the current Vette is nicer looking and has more class.

No, they're vehicles modified for racing at high speed with adjustments for driver safety.  The closest thing to a production car race you'll find is the Speed Channel's World Challenge for 4-cylinder cars like the Acura RSX, Toyota Celica, BMW 3-series, Honda Civic, VW Jetta, and Hyundai Tiburon, where the emphasis is on handling and accelleration rather than top-end speed.

Yep, the 2003 Viper is all new from the ground up.  The wheelbase has been lenghtened (2 inches IIRC), but the overall length is about the same (1/4 longer IIRC).

The frame's torsional strength has been improved, the rear sub-frame has been substantially strengthened.

The overall weight is up by about 100 pounds.

The clam-shell hood is gone.  The roof really keeps weather out now.  The engine displacement increased, as well as horsepower.

All new suspension geometry front and rear.  Bigger brakes, better clutch.

Not much of the car has been carried over from last year.

Its about time don't ya think ... after the Viper basically dominated for the last few years in just about any series it competed in...

Looks like an S2000.

Just wait until Porsche re-enters factory racing teams in 2005.

Why build an SUV?  So you can use the engine for Formula 1 of course!  :D

Why build the Carrera GT and the 980?  So you can run at LeMans of course!  :D

Bye bye Viper... and Corvette... and Ferrari...  hehe

It's a GT, maybe, but at 3380 pounds, it's a barge. If you want a sports car get a Miata or a MR2.

Miata not fast enough? Go to Flyin' Miata, they'll hook you up with 300hp and keep you at 2200 pounds.

And you'll have enough left over to buy a used C5 Corvette, if heavy is your thing

[edit: link] http://www.flyinmiata.com/projects/pokeee.asp (all horsepower numbers measured at the rear wheels)

psst; pardon me, newguy, but your ignorance is showing... that's kinda like saying that a Zero isn't a real warbird.

http://forums.corvetteforum.com/zerothread?id=402138

On the right track an unmodified Miata can beat a Viper or a Vette, on braking and cornering alone. On a track with open road, the Vette or the Viper would wax an unmodified Miata. But then, you're not the kind of guy that would try to turnfight a Zeke with a Mustang, are you? And, a forced induction Miata will whup the big guys at their own game; witness Grassroots Motorsports' Open Track Challenge.

Each has it's own arena, but a Miata is a real sports car, I guarantee it.

And I'm surprised it took so long for someone to rise to the bait.

Well if we're talking ownership of the company making said car, isn't it German now? ;)

So a heavilly moded Miata beat an 01 coupe whos driver had ahd a few drinks. woopdy doo. Shall I go through that same kill board and find all the Miata kills? Actually, there probably wouldnt be that many cause its nothing to brag about. On the right track anything can beat anything, thanks for pointing out the obvious. I've seen a tricked out MGB beat a well modded C4 vette with an awesome driver on the right slalom track. Does that mean the MGB is a better sports car? Dont think so. This is the bottom line: A stock Z06 Corvette will blow the merde out of a stock Miata. Period. With enough money you can make anything fast, so please dont talk about injecting this and that or we'll take a trip to Lingenfelter or Calloway, ok? Thanks.

That Viper is a sweet American sports car. Though I must say, I'd go prolly go for the Z over it :D
