Stupid Question #56.3
« on: April 13, 2025, 09:18:58 AM »
Has anyone used “Missions” setup within a Scenarios/Events?
The reason asked is seeing mission route lines.

I’m sure there is a reason why not, just wunderin.

Stupid Question #54.7 in the making.

I'm sure people have their own reasons, but for me personally:
1-sometimes time is accelerated in events which can mess things up
2-missions load everyone into default skins
3-things are just fairly organized in events, everyone is typically briefed prior to launch and has plane and loadout ready to go

With that said I do know a few CO/GLs who do put a mission up purely to have route lines. It would be a neat feature to be able to draw lines on map that members of the squad or vox or something could see, but I assume that ship has sailed long ago.

Yes that would be a great idea. Ya, unless its ultra easy that ship sailed.

So you know where I’m going with this. Could clipboard maps, the one that shows base layouts, files be made with route lines in a map?

Aware there are holes in the idea tho.

AKs will usually put up a mission during FSO when we're running bombers. We'll set the launch time to much later and manually launch. It keeps the routes on the map but we can change loadouts and skins.

For scenarios I find things are too fluid to bother with creating missions. Good briefings and intersquad comms is more useful in my opinion

I don't think you can change the CBM in that sense. You could replace one of the strat maps with a custom image that shows a route, but then everyone would need to put that file in the correct folder, etc.

I'd like to see it being used just to get an idea if it's worth the trouble. What benefits did you get from it?

Just assuming in RL they had both briefings and mission maps with headings they took with them. Especially bombers. I would think it's easier to keep pilots in tune. If nothing else a tentative main goal. It could even be done using a Plan A and B version.
I can also see how'd they could be often tossed out the window too.

Just curious.

True enough, probably a PITA.

It highlights the other planes in your squadron,  provided a red mission line on the map, launched us all at the same time and provided the correct skin and plane load out..

Not correct on this point. Missions will only use the default skin for a given plane. Thankfully, there is a way to replace defaults on special event maps so players aren't forced to fly the defaults which tend to be low quality, inaccurate, or both.

With the help of Greebo, FTJR, Vraciu, I have set out to have accurate defaults on most SEA maps. And a big thank you goes to Ghostdancer who actually updates the terrains with the skins we make.

I never load missions for my groups in scenarios.

Missions are subject to change right up to launch, or even after launch, if circumstances change.

For me, it is very simple to tell people what to load, what field to go to, and wait for my order to launch.  That takes about 20 seconds.

If I have time before launch, I can brief my pilots.  If not, I brief them in the air.  Time that takes depends on complexity of mission.

And then mission can change once airborne based on situation.

Trying to do all of that with mission tools in AH wouldn't work for me.

I figured there was a down side. Haven't been around long enough to know any better <shrug>

Given the opportunity, I will build a mission with waypoints EVERY SINGLE TIME. Especially in Scenarios and FSO

The trick is, you build the mission.. post it with a launch time hours into the future,  set the waypoints, people join the mission, but don't launch with it. Just roll like normal.

This also allows you to set the loadouts and the folks can find what they need ( except skin )

The beauty of this, also, is you can edit the waypoints while in flight.   The only glitch I've had with this is when something happens and the planes in the mission are no longer  active at the field.. or some other quirk where your changes can't be saved.  Doesn't happen very often.

I used the heck out of them when I've been flight leader or squad leader in events...     But, now since I'm just a flunky ( cannon fodder ) I don't get the opportunity anymore.
