Yeah, we use something like that. With icons we don't need distance, and with screen resolution, we usually can't tell what the ship is doing.
"Dot" and "Con" are often used instead of "Bogey" and "Bandit".
Since the odds of getting bounced are very rare and icons are very informative, actions tend to be separated from threat reports:
Bike, Break Right
as bike breaks, he'll visually acquire the bandit's icon and know the rest of the story.
So reports are used by the folks I fly with almost always without an action.
