The best practice for bombing is to go offline and bomb your own airfield, town, or city.  That way you don't need to worry about anyone wrecking your practice or the ack firing at you.  Adjust the arena setting to turn off "protect friendly objects" so you can blow up your own stuff, and also you can turn on the jabo bombsight.  The jabo-bombsight gives a constantly calculating hit point for bombs on your plane.

Then, simply practice bombing your own field, don't both landing, and just re-up when you run out of bombs.

The best drops are from high angle and medium/high speed.  Usually the tactic is to start just above the ack level, or near the top of it, around 7-10K.  Then dive in fairly steep, 60 degrees or more, watching your speed so that it doesn't get out of control.  Drop and pull out at 4K.  With a little practice you'll improve.  Large targets like the CV can be hit in dive-bombing attacks from 7K or more and there is no reason to dive any lower than that.

It's surprising how many people can't hit anything with bombs these days, they almost need to fly right into the target in order to land a hit.  Nice to see someone trying to improve.

Dive Bombing for Dummies:

Rule: use 1K bombs.

1) Climb to 10k

2) Find target

3) Fly towards target.

4) When target is a few seconds from being directly under you, lower throttle to 0 manifold, start a 20 degree climb until your airspeed is below 150 mph.

5) Invert plane. Look up. When target in the middle of your screen, pull into a 90 degree dive (note: engines still at "0").

6) Trim elevator down until your nose doesnt pull up by itself during dive. Keep target in your gunsights.

7) Drop bomb at 4k, pull up with elevator and joystick.

8) Pray

Another thing you can do when practicing your attacks offline is to change the arena setting for the three "ground fire lethalities" down to 0.001. That way, you can tell if you're taking hits from the flak, but it will do no damage to you. I've found it's helped me not only practice hitting my target, but also doing so without getting hammered by ground fire.

The most important thing to remember when divebombing and using rockets is that there is no fixed way to do it.  It takes some practice, and you'll get a feel for it.  Once you get a "feel" for dropping bombs, you'll start to hit stuff, without actually quite knowing how.

If you want to be really cheap, what you can do is go into the training arena, and when you arm bombs, you'll see a green plus where your bombs will land, you can use this to get an idea of how you can expect your bombs to falll.

Math's tips are ok but the techniques he describes require you to get well inside the AAA envelope of your targets.  The best approach is to:

1) Download and install a gunsight that has markings for rockets and bombs (I use a variation of mino's sight, attached).  The top tick marks are for rockets, the bottom for bombs.  They are accurate for a 45 degree dive angle.

2) Approach targets at 10k alt above ground.

3) Go into a 45 degree dive with the throttle closed.

4) Line up with your target using the bombing marks on the sight then stabilise for a second or two before releasing bombs.

Note when you drop bombs or rockets your plane should be wings level, not yawing or banking.

5) Pull out and barrel roll to avoid any ack.

6) Practice, practice, practice.

By executing a 45 degree diving attack you can get good accuracy and only enter the upper fringes of the ack envelope at your target.  With practice you can line up and drop from above the ack envelope, keeping you a lot safer than vertical dives would.

This technique is learnt and all it requires is practice, not mysticism... ;)
