Windows XP Question
« on: October 30, 2002, 12:35:30 PM »
In previous versions of Windows you could shut down all tasks except for systray and explorer to improve frame rates, but I tried in XP and Windows shuts down when certain programs are ended. My question, has anyone come up with of a list of 'minimum' tasks required to run XP to improve FPS? I'm probably being picky because I get 75 fps in 1280X1024 with my biggest drop in smoke etc. to about 65, but I want every fps available to me.....

Thanks!!!

Hi Psyco,

I think the Task Manager in XP Home has 3 tabs: APPLICATIONS --- PROCESSES------- PERFORMANCE.

I can close out all my visible "Applications" with no ill effects.

Processes are different. These are also called Services, and their purpose is not always obvious. Here is a site that identifies what each Service is, and helps you decide whether to disable it.

Black Viper's Site

Look for "Windows XP Service Info"

I found Black Vipers site a couple months ago and disabled 18 services.  It freed up some of my RAM (I only have 1 gig) and improved security as well.

Thanks Davenrino. I set my machine for now in "SAFE" mode and then disabled themes etcetera. It is unbelieveable that WIN XP has 89 services enabled when potentially only 8 are required (per Black Viper). I haven'y tried the "gamer" configuration, I'll probably test it this weekend when I have more time.

Again, thanks Gunthr, amazing what belonging to a "community" can do for a person.

errany frame rate over 60 is fine...its pretty pointless to want more because the eye cant even see more than  45 fps or something like that.
