Rope-A-Dope ?
« on: November 06, 2002, 11:11:38 AM »
I have been the victim of this manuver many many times- but I have failed to rope anybody..ANYBODY.

First-I fly the F4u-1 and since it climbs like a pregnant-lawnmower-maybe it just isn't possible to rope anyone in it?

Second-When a furball begins to turn into a gangbang and you have altitude...heck anytime you have altitude and there are a lot of cons below you..surendering altitude by way of B&Z'ing will get you "stuck in the mud" (with them) eventualy (especially if you got to turn even just a little).  So here's my Idea.  Zoom down just above the cons (say 1k above) trying to lure one to climb up with you.  Do this with WEP and 400mph+.  Hammerhead at top and see if you caught anything...like fishing really.  Repeat until you got sombody.  I've never tried it but it should work..right??  I mean instead of swooping down at 400 mph only to see the con break turn is getting boring........Can anybody give me some concrete tips on how to make this work..if it can work............specifics like dive until 450mph and roughly 1k above cons...pull-up no more than 2g's..hammer head at xxx speed...repeat...anyone that would like to show me in TA will be welcome...................

Oooooooo!!!! i love rope-a-dopes it's my fave ACM.:)

Has anyone got AKNimitiz' URL for his website with all his films?  There's a few films there of me roping people.

There's no specifics when i do it other than i know/think i have more E than a con.   I'll go vertical and see if he tries to follow, if i'm blowing the con in the dust i'll throttle back a tad to let the con think he's gaining (gotta let him think he's gonna get a kill).  The timing when you reverse is critical, too early and you'll end up with a HO, too late and the con has revovered from his stall.  I can't really explain when to reverse i've done it so often it's second nature to me, i suppose practise makes perfect.  Maybe someone else has tips when they know when to reverse.

You can even rope people on the merge- although it only works if the con is one of those guys that likes to cut his engine.  If he cuts his engine go vertical with WEP and if he follows he'll stall before you and be left floundering in the air.:)

That's a silly question of course you can.  The trick is to have alot of E.  A good way to do this and trick them up is to come from up above them then make like you're gona bnz them.  Then over shoot and pull up right in front of their face.  They can't resist to not try to get a shot on ya.  So they pull up and try to get up to you.  Watch the closing rate as soon as it starts getting slow dive down and pick em off.  It's a hard thing to explain when you should dive down onto them.  It's more of a thing feeling you get when you practice the move alot.

You don't need a good climb rate to rope someone, it just makes it easier.

In an f4u-1 the biggest trick of roping someone is to retain control of the plane in the reversal.  (Assuming you go up high enough to stall)

You can rope any plane in any plane, it just depends on each of your E state.

The Rope-A-DWeeb is probably one of the most basic E fighting manuevers and there are many different varients of the move but they all accomplish the same thing.  That is to make the bogie stall out in an attempt to get you and you fill his stalling plane full of lead.  It's ideal to have more energy than the plane you are trying to rope but in some cases, it's not necessary.

Netaces is a wonderful resource and has many write ups on how to do the Rope-A-Dweeb.  My personal favorite is the Double Immel on the merge with a spiral climb at the top of the 2nd Immel.  Not many planes can match that.  If I have enough energy, I'll even do a triple Immelman for the rope kill.

You have to learn to read E levels quickly and accurately.  If you can't you will not be able to rope well.  Having too much E makes it so the enemy can't follow you up, having too little means he'll catch you slow at the top, while having just the right amount leaves him helpless at the peak of the climb.

That's the most important aspect of rope-a-dopes.  The Hog is actually quite a good plane for it, it carries E well if you can get enough speed up.  The only tricky part is control at the top of the zoom which can be a little squirrely.

Any chance you'd make and post films of a double immelman into a spiral climb, and a triple immelman?

If they're too big to post here you can email em to sirrobin@interniq.org
