"Bull loose in the South China Sea"

USN Task Force 34 under Admiral William "Bull" Halsey vs
Imperial Japanese Army Air Force and
Imperial Japanese Naval Airforce, Phillipines, 1944

Mindanao Map

Knights are Japanese, Bishop are USN.

There is no Field Capture in this setup.

Object for USN:  Destroy all Japanese AirFields
in the south of the Island.

Object for IJA and IJN:  Destroy all USN Carriers.

USN Forces

3 Essex class Carriers with:

F6f5
TBM
SBD

1 Escort Class Carrier with:

FM2
SBD
TBM

IJN and IJA Forces

A6m2
A6m5
Ki61
TBM (subbing for Judy)
D3a
Ki67

M16

PT boats at Ports

Ground/Task Force AI flak has the following settings:

Japanese:  1.2

USN: 0.7

Down time for Fields and CV TG's is set high.  (so be careful with those TG's)

None of the Rook fields are playable.

The North area of the map is not playable.

Normally, players would not be encouraged to Kamikaze their aircraft.

However, in this setup, players flying A6M2's or D3A's loaded
with bombs may crash them into the flight deck of USN ships.
No other Japanese planes should be used as Kamikazes.

This setup tries some different things.

Hope you will bear with me and see how it goes.

Changes may be made if it is not working.

So Kamikaze attacks will damage and sink ships?   How is that handled?

Kamikaze setups leave me feeling a little unsettled.   I know "its only a game" but this is one of those uncomfortable situations for me, like the swastika issue is for others or modelling the A-bomb or incendiary bombs so we could fire-bomb and incinerate civilian targets.    I have no doubt that there are people here who would love these features, and would say they make AH "rock!".

Kamikaze was an act of ultimate desperation; of willful human sacrifice.  Both sides suffered horribly because of the tactic.      I have a friend in the old 27th Sentai who had a relative who, as a real life young kamikaze pilot, never returned from his mission.

Please just keep this in mind if you decide to bomb up a D3A and fly it into a ship.

does a D3A carry enough to sink a ship alone?

negitive, it would take at least 10-12 to sink a carrier and even more a6m2's so I would'nt count on seeing this, atleast not from me.

Looking forward to it though, must get better at flying my Ki61.

Just to clarify, should the kamikaze pilot toggle bombs a second  before impact, or should he retain them as he crashes?

I'm wondering how the damage model handles crashes of planes loaded with bombs.   If someone is going to do it, they might as well do it so it causes max damage...

I think in r/l the pilots never released bombs just crashed into the ship. I think most didnt have bombs at all espically the later the war got they just counted on remaining fuel, crash force, and point of inpact to do the most damage they could.

Don't know if that is modled in AH I doubt it is.

Salute

The Kamikaze attack was a  tactic which was first used in the Phillipines by some pilots in older model aircraft.

If people have a problem in using this tactic, don't.

I would say you would need to hit release switch before you hit target.

bombs have to travel 1000 ft before arming in AH.

I thought that distance was modified by the speed of the aircraft?
How, I'm not sure, you'd have to go back and look up the post where HT explains it.
