Need Help with Flying
« on: January 30, 2003, 10:50:35 AM »
Hey guys, I have been playing this game for about a good 2 weeks and here is my question. How come I always stall when turning even while I slightly move my joystick. And alot of the times the people in a worse plane out turn me like nothing. I have seen some pretty messed up stuff while playing. I stall about 95% of the time when turning. 1 incident i had that was COMPLETELY bs was this one - I was flying to a target in a b17. I was about 18k up in the sky. Then i switch to my ball gun(under the plane) and saw a spit IX comming at me from about 7k in the sky. He was about 3k behind me. Then he came straight up at about a 60-70 degree angle. Straight up toward me. I started shooting an saw the sparks when u hit another persons plane. He didnt stall once! He just kept comming straight up! Next thing you know he blew up all 3 B17s in one strike. Now can I please get some help with adjusting my plane and how I can stop stalling everything I turn?? Thanks.

you might be trying to turn too slow...  also your joystick might be over sensitive, and you may want to try increasing the pitch deadband and dampers some in setup.

I'm always right, it just takes some poepl longer to come to that realization than others.

As Shane said, you probably turning at too low an airspeed. But, in saying that you can also stall at higher speeds if you are turning sharply and 'crank' on the stick, these high speed stalls tend to be more violent.

I suggest you read through some of the material at the site I have attached, these guys have put together some great information for newer pilots in Aces High, as well as some of us Air Warrior/Warbirds throw-backs.

Welcome to the virtual sky's 90866, and off-line is a less stressful environment for practicing, and you'll avoid the obvious frustration you're experiencing right now. There are also trainers available on-line to help you out if you so desire.

As Psyco mentioned, if you can, come to the Training Arena and look for a trainer.  There are many people in there who can help you out, plus a few people dedicated to answering questions or showing new players the basics.

I suspect you are expecting too much turn-rate and overcontrolling them.  Some aircraft behave very poorly to being overcontrolled, spinning with little or no control. Generally, listen for the stall horn, a buzzing sound that warns of an approaching stall.  If you can control how loud the buzzing sound is, then your stick is likely calibrated alright, you are simply trying too hard to turn.

Turn rate is also affected by altitude, speed, and weight, not to mention the differences between aircraft.  Select an aircraft that is relatively easy to fly if you can, something like a Spitfire V, and don't overload it with excess fuel or bombs.  You can do this offline or online and just get the feel for flying and being gentle on the controls.  Also, it can take up to 2.5 minutes for an aircraft to achieve maximum speed, so don't be impatient.  When too slow, you are more prone to stalls while at higher speeds you may be able to handle the controls a little more firm.
