1st Time Attempt here...HELP!
« on: February 14, 2003, 08:16:20 AM »
OK...I figured I had no right to whine about the unrealistic features of certain maps if I wasn't gonna try to come up with one myself...if that makes any sense.  SOOOOOOOOOOOO, I'm figuring out the TE program, and it's driving me nuts.

Can anyone offer any start up suggestions?

Also, am I wrong in believing that you can import .bmp maps into AHTE, then work with them?  I've tried to import several different .bmp's, and the program crashes.  What gives?

Again...any startup suggestions, input, so on would be greatly appreciated!  :D

For bitmaps its MOST inportand to convert them to indexed color mode in your bitmap editor. /indexed =256 colors/

If u do this , TE should stop crash.

And u are try to import bitmep from \texsrc directory , in your terrain project directory? not by import?

Image size should be 1024x1024x256 black and white (256 color greyscale), and it should import that without crashing.

As far as I can tell the import only makes the .ELV ( elevation ) file and not the .TYP ( type.. land texture).  I maybe doing something wrong and can be corrected.
So all you'll have when you open the TE is all Water Textures.  If you place your mouse cross on different spots you should see the different elevations

Here's a program by AKWabbit that works good.  It gives you both .ELV and .TYP files.

Here's a little help file that I put together for it.

the map you need to make the elevations from is a 1024X1024 GREYSCALE! not 256 index'ed. The clipbaord map needs to be 256 color:)

Am i to understand that the Clip Board Map...is the one that should show up in the "MapWindow" of the terrain Editor?
Or is it only the Grid MAp that will show up there?\
Thanks

You can import a map in the TE itself and all surfaces will be water. You can then add textures manually. BUT, it takes much longer to do it that way.

Bmp2map is brilliant. you need a 1024x1024 pixel 256 colour greyscale image. White being 'high' ground and pure black being 0 altitude water. I believe there is a sample image in the AKbmp2map folder... Have a look at it and then try building a map using that image. You should get the idea.

Tuck, the .exe you download is just a self extracting .zip. I just downloaded it no problems.

Which .exe exactly is crashing your system?

I would say that maybe it didn't download properly.

Download it again and then double click it.

I just download it and tried it and it worked ok.
