graphics engine on AH2
« Reply #90 on: April 23, 2003, 03:43:43 AM »
Maybe it is possible to make two graphic engines just like WB2.77 had (not two games just two graphic engines working with the same program). To leave the old (as for me excelent) graphic engine for computers with worster configuration and the new one for better computers.
Why
If you have basic configuration and you'll go to the place where 30 - 40 planes are rolling or fighting over one base you FPS will go down.
Secondly somtimes it is better to fly with 30-50 FPS with worster graphics than 15-20 with good graphic effects.
So if there are two graphic engine (one exist for now so it should not be developed) connected with same simulation program it can bring more clients to the game that do not have good computers.

graphics engine on AH2
« Reply #91 on: April 23, 2003, 04:55:04 PM »
I've a 750MHz PIII with 192MB RAM and an ATI Rage Pro Fury graphics card.  I can just about run Forgotten Battles, the follow-up to IL2, with teh details turned down somewhat, on an 800 by 600 screen, offline, and even then it helps topreload the views by looking around before starting the engines, and it oftengetsa bitslide-showy. True, the graphics are beautiful, but MMOL itisn't.

As for comparisons with WB2, give over! Check AH's graphics with those of WB2. They obviously work in a similar way, but - and it's a rather large but - because AH allows players to develop terrains and plane skins, there's been a lot more development on that sideof things than WB2 ever got. Not to mention AH has wind and clouds, and stary nights...

Whatis importantin thegraphics forthis kind ofgame is "suspension of disbelief".  Sure, photorealistic graphics would be nice, but what is NECESSARY is graphics that "work", that suck you into believing you are in a consistent reality that forms the backdrop to the flying and fighting you are doing.   Not all games have such graphics. Not all games have such graphics at all stages in their career -AH didn;t, IMO, early on (shudders at the memory of painfully blue seas and skies, and less convincing terrain textures).  Aside from IL2, I've yet to see a flightsim that'll run well on my machine that does as good a job on this as AH. Yup, FB looks fantastic, even on my machine, and FS2002 can be got to look nearly asgood - if you have the money to pay for beter terrains than the default ones. Butit alsoruns sloooow - as well as notbeing a combat sim and notbeing MMOL either.

Having levels of detail sounds good to me, with a caveat - makesure that effective visibility is the same in each mode. WB2 "2D" had no textures, itused slid colours on the polygons, and had anice, seriously dark night that really tested night-flying ability, whereas WB2 "3D" had the snazzy textures for greater realism - and a night so light it was as good as daylight for most purposes - rather like night in AH now.

Here ya go....

PII 400, 128 MB RAM, 3D Accelerator with 16 MB RAM (voodoo3 at least or equal)

tho recommended:

PIII 600 or better, 256 MB RAM, 32-bit 3D accelerator with 32 MB RAM or better.

HTC has to compete graphically, and I sure hope they aim abit closer to bleeding edge.  With AW we all saw what the result of catering to the masses did...  The product was so outdated an upgrade wasn't possible, and the whole thing had to be started from scratch to come even close to modern standards...

I guess HTC is stating recommended as 900 or better that probably means the minimum will be somewhere around what IL2's recommended is..  I sure hope HT is gonna give us something more WOW than IL2 +)

The problem with multiple graphics engine (and to a lesser extent multiple downloads) is that it multiplies the testing effort required, and the potentiality for bugs.

The next generation engine will probably
be off the shelf, or a modification of an off the shelf engine, but to get the gane engine code to work with two engines, it requires sufficient code to glue the two together components together, for both instances of the graphics engine. This could take various forms, but it means writing additional code, that might have bugs.

In addition it means that the old graphics engine needs to be maintained.

Basically it means either AH2 takes
longer to develop, costs more, or
has more graphic artefacts, or a
combination of all three.

A single scalable graphics engine,
already more-or-less off-the-shelf
and tested is better than two engines.

It might also be that targeting only
OpenGL (thus supporting Mac, PC, and
potentially Linux too in one go) might
be a good move for this reason, even
if it loses a few of the DirectX bells
and whistles. The fewer the differences
between versions for different machines, the less testing and maintenance required, assuming
that the methods required in the
first place (OpenGL graphics engines)
aren't too heavyweight.

Why use the defaults? 9999 days is what, 27 years? Trinity hasn't been around that long. Shorten up the number of days cuts out the BS, as well as cutting down the search time.

It took 4.5 minutes to load the results when searching using 999 days.  It takes 6.2 minutes to load when accessing Page 2 of the search results.  Times out when trying to access Page 3.  I finally gave up.

I agree with RTHolmes.
