What ports should I block?
« on: February 22, 2003, 06:16:26 PM »
To better enhance the security of my home network, I want to filter out all the ports that I do not need. I know I need 110, 25, 80, 20, 21, and possible 137-139.  Can I disable the other ports without causing any problems on my network?

if you're not forwarding any ports in your router (or using a dmz host), all ports should appear closed from the internet.  You can check that by using a port scanner on your IP from outside your network.  One easy way to do that is on this web page.  go to "shields up" then click "test my shields"

That test says that my entire machine is in "stealth mode". I suppose you can't complain about that!
