Are you scared of SARS?
« on: April 18, 2003, 09:39:11 AM »
it looks like the SARS problem will get much worse before it gets better.  I think its going to get pretty hairy worldwide as it seems to be an airborne virus. Everyday there are more and more cases.  anyone have firsthand experience with this problem?

I sure was scared that I had a first hand experience with it when my son came down with pnemonia a couple of weeks ago.  Fortunately he recovered and the anti-biotics worked, signaling that he was not infected with a viral pnemonia...it must have been bacterial.

Scary as hell watching him struggle to breath...multiply that by a billion or so when SARS is involved...you cannot yet treat the cause of SARS, only the symptoms.  You just have to pray that the person doesn't drown in fluids built up in the lungs.

We got some doomsday hippies quoting Nostradamus and the Bible.. something about plagues and war with islamists.

Fun stuff, really.

Media frenzy is right.

Lack of personal hygien has been the major cause of the spread.... poor plumbing in an apartment building.

Theres lots of other things to be afraid of.

Like slipping on the ice, beware of the cars, sudden health problems, other diseases, your home...

If I would have to be scared of SARS, how could I live with rest of the life threatening issues, which are far more likely to happen?

It's pretty much "**** happens" when something happens.. theres not much you can do.

More people are killed in/by cars in the US in one day (ok, 2 days really) than have died from SARS since its discovery.  I am more worried about my drive home from work.

No.

But I think that the big issue with SARS is not what it has done, but what it could do.  It sounds like it has the potential to be the black plague of the new melinium.  Perhaps it's media hype, but then again lots of new diseses apear every year, most don't make the news.  This one did.  Governments are reacting to it like it could be very dangerous.  It may kill a lot of folks before its done...

In the long run though, its just one more thing that can kill us.

If it reaches africa, or India...

Lethality is 3-4% for people that get intensive care. It is not 3-4% for people that dont get intensive care.

Its been roaming through China since November. My bet is the Chinese government is sitting on a pretty huge cover up right now.
