A Weird 3 Hours
« on: April 21, 2003, 08:47:51 AM »
This morning when i booted my comp to check my email my display was messed up, lots of horizontal lines moving down really fast, with an error box in the middle going on about an out of reach VSync rate.

After a few minutes of cursing I started messing with the insides of it, removing my AGP card and slotting it back in.

After over 2 hrs of pissing about I thought either my moniter of Gfx cards was DOA, so i swaped my 2 towers about. I pluged my old one into my monitor, it displayed fine, making me think my Gfx card had somehow died. I then thought, knowing it was still under warrenty, "Oh goody, Ti model here I come!"

But, i plugged my main rig into the older monitor, this also displayed. "What the ****" I thought.

I swaped the towers over again and found everything was bloody working again!?!?

Leaving me both happy & disapointed at the same time

Guy across the hall has his computer apart when I stop by.  We talk, I leave.  A few minutes later, I hear yelling and laughing across the hall.  I head back over there, to see black smoke belching out of his computer.  Stinks like burning wires.  His roommate is red-faced, falling out of his chair laughing his arse off.  He pulls the plug on the computer, smoking stops a minute later.

Turns out he had put his floppy drive power connector on upside down.  Wires burned.  Cooked the floppy drive and PS wires, scorch marks all over inside of case.  Amazingly, the PS and rest of computer were fine.

His roommate did not make the situation any better when he said "That was the coolest thing EVER."

About 10 years ago I was the network manager at a steel mill in Arkansas.  My office was next to the server/router room.  On day I heard all the UPSs go off at the same time, and of course I got my butt in gear, saying a few choice words on the way.  "Oh, s**t" was one of the mildest comments.

I entered the server room, to see one of the plant electricians sitting at the table near the communications gear.  I asked him what he had done.  He said he needed to plug in his laptop, so he "unplugged one of those extension cords over there."  It was the one that provided the 35 amp service to the UPSs!

All the sithces and routers went down, as well as all the servers.  It took an hour to get it all back up to normal.

I locked the door after that, and never let the electrician live it down.  He couldn't understand what the big deal was.

I don't get it, if they were all on UPSs, why did they go down?

most os's (server) attempt to shut down safely if they detect a power outage,,it's better safely shutdown while there's still power than just going off when the ups's run outta juice :)

Yeah but the ups's communicate with the OS's so any shutdown won't happen untill the battery reaches the critical shutdown limit.

Either their ups' were grossly underpowered or the story has more than meets the eye.

My computer workspace is a chunk of kitchen countertop mounted to the wall. To my right side is a kitchen garbage can, there is a small space behind it. Happens that the main plug in for power strip is plugged into that outlet.

Cats under there looking around for dustbunny's, etc.

Phone rings, cat freaks & jumps, pc goes Emaeeeeeeeeee black screen & total quiet.

Darn cat managed to jerk the power cord clear out of the wall outlet.

I'm left curseing on the phone to my wife & trying to explain it all.

American plugs must be easy to pull out then?

The ones other here can be a squeak sometimes, heh.
