Manila Squad divisions for May Squad Operation
« on: April 27, 2003, 09:55:12 AM »
Allied side (first two weeks only)

332nd Flying Mongrels 11-15
Marine Air Wing 16-20
Nightmares VMF-101 21-25
Flying Zoo 4-6
68th LightningLancers 11-15
Marine Air Group 33 7-10
Dogz of War 7-10
FreeBirds 6-10
Da Muggers 7-10

Total – 90 Pilots

Axis side (first two weeks only)

880 Squadron Fleet Air Arm 6-8
56th Fighter Group 11-15
Airmageddon Squadron 4-6
Arabian Knights 11-15
DAMNED 7-10
((Arctic Storm 11th Air Force)) 7-10
Fat Drunk Bastards 7-10
412th FS 7-10
457th BG Fait Accompli 4-6
NightHawks VFA 136 4-6
Shillelagh 7-10
Rouge Squadron 4-6
III/Jabostaffel 7-10
357th Bomber Group 4-6

Total 90 Pilots

After two weeks all squadrons will rotate to the opposite side. Normally in this kind of setup I would also favor the IJN by about 10 pilots since the turn out for that side normally has 10-15% less pilots. Since we all will rotate I will keep the sides even.  Though in the write up you will note anyone in a Val or Kate will have a 2nd life to use which should help the IJN.

We have some new Frame C.O.'s getting their feet wet for the first time so be kind to them. All of them have seen several orders so they should be ok. Holler if you have any questions when you receive your orders. :)

Frame C.O.’s
Frame 1 68KO American vs Sancho Japanese. May 2nd
Frame 2 CanDo American vs Tracerx Japanese. May 9th
---
Frame 3 Fatty American vs Dugger Japanese. (Remember squads switch sides) May 16th
Frame 4 Drill American vs Starbird Japanese. May 23rd

Frame 1 Orders will go out today to 68KO and Sancho. :)

   Ohmigod..this is gonna be ugly in Frame 3...   Guys, I'm game but I'm sure gonna need help to CO a frame.  Yeah, as mentioned, I've seen a couple of sets of CO orders.

Freeze that thought... "seen them".  How the hell you convert that to detailed squadron assignment I have NO IDEA..  :D

But if some of the vets will help me I'll do my best.  Is there a manual somewhere on what a CO does?? :)

Lots of vets in here to help you out. Pick one you know or like and e-mail them. I am sure they will help you out when it is time. You can also e-mail me back after I send you the orders and ask anything you want, I will be glad to help out. :)

Usually pretty simple stuff. You have a list of targets to attack and defend. You just e-mail the squads right off the bat (here is a link to e-mail all the C.O.'s
http://events.simladder.com/tod.php
and ask if they want a particular ride (you can't keep em all happy) and give em a day or two to reply. Then you just assign squads to the targets and if you want give them a path to the target.  Consider fuel and load out for all the squads. Assign escorts if you can and consider what other targets they could hit. The day of the frame I would not plan to fly, but some do anyway. Or you could be a gunner for someone so your hands are free to type. :D

What Nim said, except I personally leave alot up to the Squadron CO's on fuel, ord, and waypoint management.  Give them a target, most squads and their respective internal leaders know how to get the job done without micro-management.

What did Nim say? I miss that post?

Rip is right of course. Many Frame C.O.'s leave much of it up to the Squad C.O.'s, but others enjoy being specific. Both ways will work. :)

The times I have CO'd in a series like this I try to be flexible allowing for other possibilities in the later rounds if I am the opening frame CO. Other than that I only give out specific missions and launch points and leave the actual orders up to the individual squadron CO's. I also try to balance it out numbers in areas and hopefully strike a balance in those areas.

BUT don't be so general or broad in your main orders that the squadron CO's take your orders to mean something other than what you intended. That is where the confusion starts to set in and it can hit you very quick. So if you want a squadron to act as escorts for a group then be specific so they don't wander about and get your bombers killed.

Well I've got two weeks to stew on it...LOL.  Daddog, could you possible send me a copy of the orders you send to the first two frame CO's so I can look at that and then see how it plays out in the frame?

That'd be a start.

Strike Flights Mission Orders

Mission Brief:   The Strike Flights purpose is to eliminate the enemy ability to re-supply the forward units and airbases in the area. Once you accomplish your primary orders listed below you are free to engage any enemy aircraft you happen to encounter. Most off all remember to check your fuel usage and try to make it home.

Strike Flight CO’s run through your flight to your target area before our flight on Friday. This way you should be able to determine the best route and altitude for fuel settings according to your mission. For a baseline you can refer to the one’s I listed above.

Strike Flight #1   Marine Air Wing (Fw-190F-8 and Bf-109G-10, Fw-190A-5) Total between 16-20 pilots
Target Listing:    Small town south west of A70 (6.11.1 area) Meeting place of Allied Command in that area.
Launch Airfield:   A34
Mission Load out:   Split your force equally between F-8’s and G-10’s or A-5’s for escort duty. The F-8 section will be responsible for eliminating the town at the target area. The escorts are needed because you will be flying into an area with an Active Allied airfield where there is thought to be a large formation area for enemy strike groups. Eliminate all structures at the village the enemy has taken.

Strike Flight #2   VF-17 Jolly Rogers (Fw-190F-8); 457th BG Fait Accompli (Fw-190F-8) Total between 8-12 pilots
Target Listing:    Refinery in (6.7.8 area) and Train north east of refinery (6.7.8 area)
Launch Airfield:   A40
Mission Load out:   You will be flying in a strike package only with Fw-190F-8’s. You’re mission is to hit the Refinery and the re-supply train that runs to it. The train will be coming into the refinery from the NE about 3 minutes flying time from the Refinery. You are to locate the refinery and then follow the tracks back out to the train location. Do not attack the Refinery till the train has been destroyed. Attack the train first.

Strike Flight #3   Shillelagh (Fw-190F-8); Rogue Squadron (Fw-190F-8) Total between 15-21 pilots
Target Listing:    Train North West of Barracks Factory (7.8.5 area) runs along river between A51 and the Barracks Factory. And Train west of Radar Factory (7.6.5 area)
Launch Airfield:   A40
Mission Load out:   You both have identical targets. The trains will be running re-supply into Barracks and Radar areas. You will have to locate the factory complexes while not engaging those same areas. Once you locate the factories search for the train tracks and follow them until you locate the train. Generally the trains should be within 5 minutes flying time of the factory area. Attack the trains first and if you have ordinance and fuel left over then return and engage the factory complexes but RTB if fuel enters the critical stage of less than 45% in your main tank.

Low over the Ardennes
Defense Flights Mission Orders

Mission Brief:   The Defense Flights purpose is to deny the attacking enemy any chance of hitting our areas that the High Command has outlined for you below. You are to eliminate the enemy as quickly as possible and maximize your chance of returning to base.

CO’s Each flight has a “defense listing”. In that defense listing is your task for the frame. It is up to you to determine how to cover that defensive task.

Locate and use the nearest active field to your defensive zones.
It is suggested that you carry drop tanks on all flights. Also if you think you can rotate aircraft through refueling in stages then do so. This way you are all not off defense at the same time and you are able to have the maximum amount of aircraft on scene for defense.

Take some time and run through your flight so you get an idea of how long it takes to get to your area and loiter. This way you can have your 2nd flight coming up about halfway through your loiter so they are on station as you RTB.

Defense Flight #1   Arabian Knights (3 Me-262’s and Bf-109G-10 or Fw-190A-5); =Groverats= (Fw-190A-8) Total between 23-30 pilots
Defense Listing:   Train south of AAA Factory (9.14.2 area) and Train south west of Ammo Factory (9.14.5 area)

Defense Flight #2   DAMNED (Bf-109G-10 or Fw-190A-5); III/Jabostaffel (3 Me-262’s and Fw-190A-5’s) Total between 11-16 pilots
Defense Listing:   Truck Convoy south of V24 (10.12.7 area) and Truck Convoy North West of V30 (10.11.8 area)

Defense Flight #3   Nightmares VMF-101 (Bf-109G-10 or Fw-190A-5); Da Muggers (Bf-109G-10 or Fw-190A-5) Total between 15-21 pilots
Defense Listing:    Train north east of Refinery (10.7.1 area)

Fuel and Cruise Settings for Fw-190F-8

This was done by VF-17 Intelligence officer Ltblogs. We don’t have a tremendous amount of experience in the Fw-190F-8 so he put this together at my request.

I did only one test:

Offline, Rhine Map, Fuel Burn Multiplier 1.5, winds SE 10 MPH

FW190F8 - 1 x 500kg, 4 x 50kg and full ammo and internal fuel

Altitude 5k take-off: Flat out w/ two notches of flaps and full power climb for 1 minute

Climb out: Full RPM and 40" MAP

Cruise at 5,000 ft: 30" MAP and 2100 RPM, Indicated speed 170-80 MPH

Results:  Total flight time to dry tanks - 65 minutes
Tank   Cumulative Time

Auxiliary Empty   10 minutes
Forward 1/2   22
Forward Empty   34
Aft 1/2   48
Aft 1/4   57
Aft Empty   65
Notes:

These settings get you only 6-7 sectors one-way.  I took off at A10 in upper corner of Map and was one sector from target when the engine quit.  I can't say this is a max range setting.

Someone will have to tell me if I was riding a tail wind or running into a headwind based on a SE setting in the control panel. (We think this wind setting was giving him a NW push. If anyone else can confirm or refute that please let us know ASAP.)

Most of my test was done on auto-pilot.  The plane can very gently be turned at the cruise settings.  Good enough for recon.  Anything harsher should be down at max RPM and probably at least 35" MAP.

As the tanks empty you can wind back a few hundred RPM and maintain altitude.

Dugger, I feel your pain Bro.  I go before the fireing squad one frame earlier than you.  Thanks for the preview Reschke.  I will have to get up to speed on the Japanees plane types real quick so I can make the proper estimations and assignments.

Ahah, Tracer, LOL.  They didn't tell me who the other sacrificial lamb was going to be.  Well, sooner or later I guess we have to do this thing.  They say the anticipation is worse than the real thing... don't believe it for a minute.. :)   It's gonna be painful.  ;)

lol you guys will do just fine. Most important thing it to make sure you defend and attack all targets given.  You can leave much of the details up to the C.O.'s or take care of that yourself. :) Your call.
