What temperature range should an AMD 2400 run at?
« on: May 29, 2003, 04:14:59 PM »
Well.....what are the acceptable temp ranges?

Mine normally runs in the 39-40 C range but last night after extended periods of running a game I noticed that it went up to 43 C.  Is this within the normal temp range?  And at what temp should I get really worried?

I was getting terrible trouble with my XP1800 at 50+. I put in more fans. Below 50 seems to be stable. Athlons are terribly hot beasts. I have a coolermaster alloy case and sk6 hsf and it still ran at 50+. Case fans  brought it down to 37. Don't beliewve the hype about alloy cases being giant heatsinks. It's bollox. They still look great though.

Geez....39-40 is ice cold for a CPU, typically you will see 45-50 in moderate use.  Officially, most AMD processors Ive worked with have a thermal tollerance of 90° C, so 50's is N O T H I N G.

My latesy beast I made for peace and quiet,

Antec Sonata case with quiet 480 PS
512 DDR 2700
AMD 2500+ barton @333
Zalman CNPS6000 ultraquiet CPU cooler
MSI K7N2G-ILSR mobo (removed fan from IGP allow cooling thru main fan)
Radeon 9800 Pro
120gig Maxtor HD
SOny 52X CDR
(DVD burning soon!)

This thing is QUIET....10x better than my old system.

Average CP temp is 46 idle....52 during intense gaming....and this is in silent mode

Check the code on your chips

Maximum Temperature

T: 90C
V: 85C

Normal Palominos are always near 50-60c. I wouldn't worry.  To much.

My XP2000 hits 55 and it shuts down the pc, even though I have 75 set in the bios.  Frikking annoying

This figures. I find my palomino 1800 will lock the machine solid (randomly) above   50C and I spent MONTHS troubleshooting hard lockups not believing that my CPU could be too hot in this flashy case with a copper heatsink. But it was.

These bulletin boards are littered with my pleas for help:o

Odd mine runs 50 at idle and 55-57 while gaming. Never a lock up or shut. I have a fancy vantec fan and heatsink too. Don't seem to help much.

Possible problems:
  • DEFECTIVE chip
  • DEFECTIVE Temp sensor
  • DEFECTIVE Heatsink/mounting of the heatsink/too much thermal grease.

1st two are pretty cut and dry, the third would be if your heatsink has very poor contact with the CPU core...possibly exasterbated by thermal expansion of the heatsink causing loss of contact with the core and immediate safety shutdown to keep you from frying your CPU.
