Looking for job with meaning - any ideas?
« on: June 02, 2003, 10:13:04 AM »
I'm bored with working to make everyone's wallet fatter.  There's gotta be a job out there for a programmer who wants to contribute to the betterment of humanity and the environment but I can't find it.

I know the idea is probably sophomoric, but if there's anyone out there with a line on a meaningful job for a coder with skillz, or for any other position, please clue me in.  I work cheap, too.

-sudz

PS  I know you're probably thinking that if I go back into male stripping humanity will rejoice and the birds and the beasts of the field would celebrate, but I just can't handle being a piece of meat again :)

Browse the web for missing children websites, if you can program something that can speed up the way a quasi online "amber alert" is spread, it'd certainly qualify as a job with meaning.

If not, develop a way to nuke back the SPAM and PopUp originators. Your children's children will hold you a hero :D

Why not just donate some programming time to a non-profit organization as a gift to humanity and keep the job you've got?

Thanks for your replies so far, gents . . .

Lance: Too late, I'm already jobless :)   I've got lots of options but nothing I really have a feel for.

Syz: I don't have security clearance but, even though I'm completely patriotic, my youthful indiscretions would probably disqualify me.

Raub: I actually looked into starting my own brewery but the startup costs and government regulations put me off.

OIO:  A two-parter, eh?  First, the amber alert system would be greatly enhanced if ISPs sent an automatic email upon receipt of a valid alert - unfortunately out of my hands.  Secondly, spammers are like hackers - as soon as you devise a defense the F**king marketeers are there with a new in.

I know I'll probably end up just working to survive like 99% of the humans on this world. But it's worth a shot if someone out there can clue me in.

C'mon . . . Professional bachelor's degree, minor in math, brews his own beer . . .

Damn Sudz....looks like we hit the unemployment line together, eh?  It sucks.

I hope you find something that you like soon.  But in the meantime, you got any beer to sample?  :)

Sounds like a job with a future. If you build the perfect defense, you would soon go out of buisness. :)

I dont literally mean to use the internet for the job.

There's a huge amount of agencies and institutions that dedicate themselves to finding these kids. Unfortunately they dont usually work together or find it hard to work together because they all use different methods and stuff.

If you're a programmer, maybe you could make some kind of software that would allow them to share resources and knowledge. Dunno, im just giving ideas, but if you could do something like that, I can't think of any job with more meaning than that.

I taught special ed for 5 years...

I figure I don't even need to give to charities anymore. I've done my time. It was very rewarding and I'm glad I did it, but I got very tired of being dirt poor. Do something like that while you're still young and stupid.

I don't know if the question is genuine, but here's an answer.

Right now, a good programmer can find extremely interesting positions in genetics.

A friend of mine did his final project at the university (Telecom Engineering) helping design a program that could simulate, via imaginary numbers, the resulting proteins from gene combinations.

While it would seem you need a career in biology, the problem is that of a mathematical nature with loads and loads of programming.

I think you could find that very interesting and fulfilling. After all, it can bring the solution to illnesses such as Cancer...
