Which is better/best?
« on: June 04, 2003, 09:49:12 PM »
I'm tired of my slow dial up connects @ 26.6

I live out in the boonies of Oregon, and I have a sat dish, as cable is unavailable in my area.

I think I can get DirectWay from Direct TV off my dish, and I think I can get broadband from AT&T. I haven't called to ask about either one yet.
I wanna gather some info first.

Which is better?

Remember I still wanna be able to play AH online.

I've heard going thru a satilite would probably raise my ping to the game, but be faster surfin the net, is this true?

Is broadband a cable only thing? Or does it work thru phone lines?

And how can it be faster than my ISP if it uses the same phone lines?

My connects are limited to 26.6 from my ISP due to the old switch gear out here in the boonies, some are digital, and some are still analog.

Basically I wanna know what my options are.

Would it be possible to have both satilite and phone dial up on one computer? So I could dl faster when surfing the web, but connect thru my ISP when I wanna play AH?

Any info is greatly appreiciated.

Hi,

I talked to a sat user a while ago. (6 months) He said there would be a significant lag factor in the satelite for gaming. For casual net browsing and downloading it's fine but for a real time game something else would be better.

I use DSL that comes over the same phone lines as before but with a much differant modem and frequency. I can use the phone for voice at the same time I am online. Check with the phone company to see if you can get it. If you really are out in the boondocks it will be unlikely you can use it.  :(

AFAIK, the dish uses your phone line  (so you will still not be able to surf and talk on the phone) for upload and the dish to recieve (download)  so for just surfluff'n around the web it's much faster than phone line.  but for gaming where you send as much info as you reciev it will suck.

for broadband you got 2 options  cable and dsl.  dsl uses you phone line.  I doubt you can get it in clatskini.  there are still areas of Portland/vancouver that can't get it. but it wouldn't hurt to check.

cable uses the cable tv lines.  not all cable lines will suport the broadband internet use though.  they have to be capable of carrying a 2 way signal, and the old lines where downstream only.
the guy who installed my cable said that a rule of thumb is that if you can order PPV on your cable box you can probably get internet service, if you have to call in to get it, or if your cable box plugs into your phone line to order then you can't get service

With regard to the above two choices definitely go broadband from AT&T instead of Directway for online gaming. You will have too much lag with directway which will spoil your aceshigh experience....

Agree with all the answers above including cable and DSL usually not available in Boonies.  Yes, you can use sat and dialup on same puter.

BTW my old DSL connected at 760 down/ 220 up.
My cable connects at 1900 down/360 up
Aces Hi pings bout same with both at 130.
Dialup ping from Hawaii is 250.

Good luck in whatever you choose.

If you have the choice go with Broadband....either DSL or Cable.  The Direct Way will be way too laggy for playing on AH in my opinion.

Satellite connections suffer packet latencies measured in seconds.  No way to do anything real-time with this type of connection.

what Skuzzy said and keep in mind that for DSL to get the good speed you need to be closerer to the actual phone box! the closer you are to it the faster your DSL. I think i heard at one time that if your over a mile from the box it will really suffer in the speed department.
IMO cable is the fastest for comercial use unless like i said you live right next door to the phone box

by phone box i mean the big router box (or whatever its called) that you see at niegborhood entrances, or at the start of a side street!
