a SAD moment in the CT
« Reply #15 on: June 17, 2003, 12:03:37 AM »
Disagree myself - I like the ground war. It gives the battle in the CT another dynamic like A2G and Anti-Armor plus it gives a change of pace from the "mindless" furballing from two close fields.

I do agree that something needs to be done though to prevent "Landgrabbing." I really like the idea of ratcheting up the hardness on the capital and making it where it will take several loads of troops to capture a target. Who the hell ever heard of a para drop with ONE GOON! Make it 5 min to take a target IMO.

Another idea might be to just turn the STRATEGY back on. That would mean some targets would rebuild faster than the stated down times unless the strategic targets were taken down and supplies cut off to the target.

Hawk, as for the suggest about cutting the scoreboard, it the easiest thing in the world to do - just don't look at it.  ;)  Only thing is that if you are gonna have any type of "Perk Planes" you got to have something like the scoreboard. I say just simply reset the points score for each new map. Would end alot of problems.

I"m all for a ground aspect of gameplay in the CT.  It adds a dimension to the gameplay.  I usually say to each their own, everyone pays the same $$$ to be entertained so be it.  However I do start to have issues when it cuts too much into the ability of other to enjoy the game too.

I think most people feel this way.  The problem lies in that different people feel that point where it becomes "too much" lies in a different place.  And that's where disagreements start.  For me, the combat theater is about just that, combat.  So if base attack and capture is a means to an enjoyable battle then great.  But if it's sensless land grabbing I feel that it does more harm than good.  Because people that are playing will leave, and then the low numbers will keep others away.  Then if they log in anyway seeing the map all in red will certainly act as a deterrent.
None of which is good for the CT as a whole.

And now I'm ranting and raving  so I'll be going now. Just my way more than 2 cents worth. :)

- just don't look at it

That was in reply to a post I saw. I will have to go find it. I dont care about the score...sure we need perk points but do we have to know how we get them?

Who else but the 325th squad!! I'm serious there were about 6 of them playing as whoopeeed heathen communists.

Ahem... *Allies*, you Natzee. :)
Thats not surprising at all, since we're a heavily allied-leaning squadron. When numbers are skewed like that, we do make a *real effort* to keep it fun for everyone in the arena. We know that 11-2 isn't all that fun, but we also know that showing 13 in the arena is likely to attract more people, so we'll just try to wait it out... Yeah, we'll try to kill you in the meantime, but we'll do our durndest to be sporting about it. If you see any other behavior, let us know, (with names and film preferably) and we *will* make sure it's handled.

No, not everyone is going to like us. We're a pain in the a.. Allied Squadron. But we're a historically-based squadron, and we take pains to HONOR THE MEMORY OF THOSE THAT WENT BEFORE US. Each of us selects a REAL pilot from the Checkertails to represent, and that ties us all the more closely to "gentlemanly" behavior.

When I asked why nobody on the communist side wanted to switch they told me it had something to do with airpower or something.

Define "they". Who specifically?
Knowing the guys, it's pretty likely they were practicing in the Yak-9T for Tuesday night's Squad Night.

I then proceeded to kill 4 of their vulching fighter and bombers with my Ju87 Stuka.

Really?
Who?
The 325th has a strong anti-vulch culture, so I'd sure like to know which Checkertails were vulching.
I also find it a *little* hard to believe 6 guys vulching when it was 11 to 2 on sides. Not the Checkertails style at all.

Then I went to another ungauarded field and shot down some more with an Ostwind. :)

Good deal... If you can get us with an Ostie, more power to ya... That shows that we're not coordinating properly...and that which kills us (repeatedly) *also* makes us stronger... :)

lol buncha flatulent tripe phyno...

tell me exactly who is hawk supposed to be representing? and what does his lame behavior, especially in gv's have to do with "honoring" the real men who had no choice to *refuse* a fight, escpecially on the ground.

Obviously we have an underlying conflict in "goals & objectives" here. I enjoy the CT if/when we have enough folks flying to provide enjoyable air combat. The restricted plane sets provide a relative level of balance not found in the MA. I've also spent some time "supressing" those focused on grabbing bases...not as much fun but not all bad.

The problem arises when you have a lopsided play balance combined with base grabbing/vulching to a point where the CT becomes almost unplayable. I do believe we came close a couple times this week. While I certainly recognize each/every players right to play in manner that maximizes his/her enjoyment I think we need to clarify the "role" of the CT a bit.

Personally I see it as an arena where aircombat between historically matched plane sets is superimposed on a historical background. The "strategic" elements are secondary to the tactical setup. The MA provides plenty of options for the "otherside".

The real reason these folks are in the CT is simple...they cant hack it in the MA. So they invade the CT where they can "take" bases with little or no opposition. I certainly would hate to see ground combat and/or base capture eliminated from the CT...but I think some of the variables need to be tweaked...maybe in a layered manner...leave the bases along the "frontier" as they are...but harden them as you go further back...realistically aircombat (the real focus of the game) didnt play a large role in the actual capture of territory...air superiority was a key factor.

Obviously its beyond the current scope of play...but I'd like to see the "capture" portion of the game handled by AI with the active players supporting the operation. You knock out enemy air cap...your bombers get thru. Your ground attack planes hammer defenses...eventually you win.....truthfully the current setup is totally unrealistic....just my 2 cents.
