I doubt the effectiveness in the traditional MG role - a half seconf burst, reload, half second burst.

I`d rather take a trusty MG42 ummmmm H&K 21E / H&K MG3.

Saw a program about this about 5 years ago - it doesn't look like it has progressed very far since then.
War! Never been so much fun. War! Never been so much fun! Go to your brother, Kill him with your gun, Leave him lying in his uniform, Dying in the sun.

Gun nerd note:  HK 21 is not at all related to MG3 or MG42.  :)

Well I`ve seen MG3s and MG42s and they look strikingly the same, apart from caliber, a different strength umm... "receiver braking spring" and on the MG42 the cocking lever is horizontal, while on the MG3 it is T-shaped.

I didn`t get to fire the MG42 dangit ;)

Only saw pictures of the 21E... "50 years of Heckler & Koch" cites it as being the export version of the MG3. Any links for me to salivate on ?

MG3 is an MG42 adapted to fire 7.62 NATO ammunition.
HK 21 is based on the G3 rifle, configured for belt feed.
It's kind of a combination LMG/rifle.
