For killing bombers blowing a wingtip off is indeed the fastest way.

They can absorb a lot of punishment, but they don't fly with a missing wingtip.

Fighters while I'll take hits wherever it does seem to help to be "trying" at least to hit one point.

If you are firing all guns the hit sprites you see may be all mg. Even with all center line guns the trajectories are different.
