why is my screen soo rough?

  ok, my picture moves along very roughly and i was wondering if i can fix that without buying anything, but if i did have to buy somthing, what would i have to buy?

Try running at lower resolution.  640x480 at 16 bit may be necessary.  Ultimately, you need to upgrade CPU and video card to get really smooth framerates.

 You really should tell us what your system specifications are. Windows9x?? What version of DX?? CPU speed? ram? Video card, sound card? Maybe if you can what video/sound card drivers you are using (find out using "DXdiag").
 What else is running in the back ground when AH is running? (perform a [ctrl] [alt] [del] ONCE to find out. Do not hit that combo twice or you'll reboot of course)

 Then, somone may have a solution or be able to point at the most likely cause of what the problem is.
