Actually Pigs are the pet to have around if you have problems with snakes. They love to eat them and the poison doesn't affect them.

Snakes are an absolutely vital pest control.  Rattlesnakes are built rodent killers.

Heheh, Vietnam has 50 different types of snakes.  49 are poisonous.

The 50th just eats you whole.

LOL...Swoop I should have taken a picture of the cockroach I killed last night.

I'm looking about in the fridge and I hear a scraping and fluttering sound...followed by a "thunk"...behind me.

It was a huge female roach. Females fly here, not males.  But it was so big it could hardly keep itself in the air.

I used bug spray on it.  I can't squash them when they are that big.  The "crunching" noise is too much.

No indigenous snakes in Bda.

The best way to kill roaches is to get computer duster, turn it upside down and instantly freeze them.  it's like liquid nitrogen to them :).  You also get a great conversation piece to frame in the living room.

Swoop - a move to Ireland would be better than moving to Britain. No snakes at all in Ireland. I have never seen an adder/viper in England. The only snake I've seen out of captivity in England was a dead grass snake. Went to Blackpool fair once, where you could have your picture taken holding a snake. My ex-wife was up for it - had it twice coiled round her neck, and held its head. I wouldn't touch the damn thing!

But I am fascinated by snakes. The American ones are nothing much. Real snakes live in Australia, which has the ten most poisonous snakes in the world. These include the death adder (7), a sea snake (5 or 6), the Taipan (3 - lives amongst sugar cane and has a horrible bite with "machine gun" jaws"), the Brown snake (2 - the most dangerous snake because it lives in suburbs near people, and is not known to suffer fools gladly) and the most poisonous snake of all - the Fierce Snake - lives in the wilds of Northern Territory.

Most snakes will not engage a human. They are looking for small prey for food, and are not interested in us. Most would therefore avoid us. One exception to this is the African snake, the Black Mamba. That thing will stand 4 feet high, and will give chase. It uses a side to side sweeping motion to propel itself and can reach 17mph.

Living in the country does have it's advantages.  Plenty of room (depending on how much land you own), quiet, few neighbors (if any).

Disadvantages, there is one that comes to mind immediately.   Dialup internet access.  No cable out in the boonies.

Britain is god's own country. No hurricanes, no typhoons, no volcanoes, no earthquakes, no nasty snakes, big spiders or tigers. But if you like those things, they are not very far away.

And we have lush green land because of all the rain. I think you need to be born here to appreciate (and withstand) it. ;)

get cats... the cats eat the vemin that the snakes use for food.   the snakes (or anything else) can't compete with tabby for vermin killing..  cats will also eat small snakes or baby snakes and will try to kill adult ones I have seen em kill very large gopher snakes out in the open.

Gun control again. Oh my. You're obsessed with the laws in other countries, but whine incessantly about people commenting on US gun control - even when they don't. Amusing though.

Like I said, if you're not a native it would be difficult to live here, depending on where you hail from.

Having said that, this past summer has been the best for a long time - probably good for the snake population.

Growing up on a farm in sunny Northern California taught me a lot of things, this happens to be one of them. Cats and geese roamed the yards and I never once saw a snake close to the house.

Down by the creek was a different story, I was never sure if it was the Cicadas or snakes making all that racket :D
