Initially, the systematic bombing of the Finnish airbases was not part of the Soviet summer offensive, which begun on June 9th 1944. The Soviet air arm concentrated on low level raids on the frontlines and bombing the Finnish supply routes. However, the effectiveness of the Finnish fighter defence, the Stuka attacks of the German "Gefechtsverband Kuhlmey" and the turning tide on the ground forced the Soviet high command to reconsider.

On sunday, July 2nd 1944 at 19:55 hours, 16 Pe-2s and 36 Il-2s attacked Lappeenranta airbase. Four minutes later, 44 Pe-2s and 28 Il-2s attacked Immola airbase. Both attack groups were heavily escorted by Yaks and La-5s.

The Finnish radio intelligence had intercepted messages which revealed the Soviets' intentions. The Finns at Lappeenranta and Taipalsaari airbases rose to intercept well before the attack. However, the Germans at Immola didn't believe the Finns' warnings of the incoming raid. Their fighters were scrambled at 19:58 - the first bombs rained on the airfield one minute later.

After the raid was over, the Finns had claimed 4 Pe-2s, 11 Il-2s and one Yak destroyed, for two 109s and 3 Brewsters lost on the ground. The Germans didn't have a chance to fight back and took heavy losses, 9 planes were destroyed on the ground.

I have a new email it is bundy28@comcast.net I have changed it on the BB user cp and people keep sending emails to bundy28@prodigy.net and I do not get the orders.I also have a special event XO who handels all our paper work and posting witch is 68Falcon his email is ybej@optonline.net  please can you get us on the right list.

68KO, while I appreciate your frustrations, please can you not post your email problems here, as this forum is for Special Events Announcements only.    This particular thread is about today's Euro-timed Snapshot, which is a walk-on event and does not have any orders sent out to anyone.  I presume you are actually referring to the SquadOps, in which case may I suggest you post in the SquadOps forum regarding your email?  Thanks!
