My AOHell!
« on: October 13, 2003, 08:03:32 AM »
Ok so i used to have AOL (technically i still have AOL).  Last january i got broadband but kept the AOL so other people could use net at the same time.  Came July and it wasn't really getting used so i decided to get rid off it.  I sent AOL an email to cancel and got a reply.  for several months nothing and then i started getting charged again. This even tho i had cancelled my card because i lost my wallet.  Fed up with AOL i rang the bank and asked them to cancel directly, they said they couldn't because it is a debit and not a direct debit.  Soooo back to AOL...i rang them up and cancelled my subscription AGAIN.....however i still got charged this month!

I rang the mofos up today and they told me that i only rang them up to cancel yesterday and unfortunately that was one day after the debit was due and bad luck on my part.  In reality however i rang them over a week ago the thieving B&£^%£S!!!  they even told me i have been connected to the net using AOL several times recently..... well that's fricken clever as i don't even have AOL installed!!!

i'm waiting for my phone bill at the mo to prove that i haven't been online with AOL like they said and to dispute when i cancelled!

Maybe they can make it up to you by sending you a free AOL disk or two in the mail?   :)

My local service provider has two separate entities that must co-ordinate in order to get a new line set up or to cancel.

First is the ISP.  They do a good job and are ready willing and able to get whatever is required to be done.

Then there is the telephone company.

I just moved.

Back in late August (knowing how slow these guys operate) I requested a DSL line to be set up for the new house.  Called a couple of weeks ago and found out it was "done" on Sept. 25th.

Then my bill arrives.  Sure enough I am "charged" for a DSL install...but the line guys just set up a regular phone line.

I called last week to check on the situation and I got a "Sorry...we made a mistake, I am putting in a new order now..should be up by Monday (today).

Call to check this morning.

"Sir, we were doing repairs and installs in your area this weekend and since you only called on Thursday the requisition did not make it through our system in time and therefore you "might" get it by NEXT monday."

"Okay" says I.."Time to call in the BIG GUNS"

I made a phone call to a senior guy I know at the utility and he assures me it will be done today.

So..thrila...it's not what you know...its WHO you know.

They'll send you whole crates of them if you ask.

A couple years ago I ordered a box of 500 AOL floppies.  Better than popsicle sticks I tell ya!

I am AOL-less now for the first time since '94 thank God, although I haven't cancelled yet in order to advise peeps of my new email address.

Thrila, how did they charge the fee to a credit card that was cancelled?

In the mid 90´s MSN pulled a lot of "dirty" ones like the case you are describing. I went to court with it here and won.

I shudder to think how many of them I've thrown into the trash. If they'd just send them on rewritable cds, it wouldn't be so bad. ;)

those disks make awsome targets.  very reflective and easy to see, we set 'em up at about 150 yds and see how many rds we can get through the center before you break one.

I've also thought of collecting a couple thousand (shouldn't be hard), and using them for shingles on the shed. you'd only need one nail per, and it would make a cool reflective 'fish scale' pattern.  then I'd take a pick of it and send an e-mail to aol thanking them for sending this 'useful' disk out.

you know, that would be a great new competition-  What is the coolest thing you can make using AOL disks?

thrilla, when you sent the e-mail canceling sevice, did you save it? did you do the recived varification option?

both of those are a must when doing a transaction where the other guy could make more money off you if he pretends he never got the e-mail.

Never ever let anyone or any company have EFT/direct withdrawal from your checking/savings account.  When the time comes to change providers, they will continue to hit you...and most will shrug it off and let it go.

I had a battle with my local insurance company that was withdrawing $52 a month for my car insurance.  I called GEICO, and no joke, saved 60%!  So I spoke to the insurance company, cancelled the policy and what do you know, they hit the account...call, complain...the vow it'll never happen again (it caused an overdraft) and it hit again the next day.  Called credit union, they blocked them from touching my account and refunded me everything, plus no fees on the charges incurred (yay!)  Local insurance company plays dumb "we can't touch it, its automatic"...cuts me a refund check.  I get check, deposit it...they try to charge me once again.  Check bounces, they issued a stop payment.  Fun!

Showed check to police where they may go after the insurance company for  "useless instrument" stuff.  State has been called, their checking them out too.  :lol

I got a letter from the Fraud division from the bank this morning telling me a retailer (AOL) tried billing me for a for a debit payment on my cancelled card (cancelled over 2 months ago). The bank made arrangements to continue the debit with my new card.  Please contact the retailer and notify them of the new card blah blah...etc.

Well that's just fricken great! what the hell is the point in cancelling a card!

It was an email off an actual person not auto and yes i still have them on my computer.

this is really pissing me off! they are deliberately making it difficult for me to cancel my subscription. I tried cancelling it through AOL, then the bank and now AOL again! I'm waiting for my phone bill to come and then i'm gonna do something about a refund. I'm really gonna flip out if i get charged again.

Thrila, Call AOL. Call the bank.

Do not use Emails, call, ask for their names.

Once you have a name to refare to things will get easier.

A couple of years ago My wallet got stolen at the statepolice office, as I was going to renew my driverslicens.
When I got home I found that it was missing and I called the statepolice office, of course.
No, but a woman had called and told that she left it at the sheriffs office. Happy that it was found, I drove down the next day to pick it up.

Nope, there was no wallet delivered by anyone.
Now this smelled a little funny and I decided, inspite that I was in desperate need of my cards, to cancel em.

So I called around to the companies and finely I got to one major cardcompany that told me: That my card had already been canceled and shiped out by fedex yesterday. ??????????

So, the one that stole the card/wallet had already got my new card. And used it.
Now this is going to be a very, very long story, but I will make it short. From facing a wall of NO´s to start with, Taking names and writting down time and answers, went to many yes and after about a week and 200 phonecalls, I got a refoundcheck for all that had been put on my "new" card since I cancelled it.

It happend in the USA
