Spyware

All,

I have had a few problems with my browser, IE, and have been trying to do some troubleshooting.  I have been getting lags and redirected from my home page.

So far I have used 3 programs to find and delete the spyware and none have done it all. Here is what I have used in order of usage. All are FREE.

Lavasoft adaware V6 with upgrade. Caught some common spayware.

Spybot. Got 3 that adaware missed.

Spyhunter. Got 4 more that the other 2 missed. Free demo that won't delete the files. It does give enough info to find and delete them manually.

All these were found on my fresh system less than 3 weeks since format and install of win 98. I also refuse cookies unless I trust the site, like AH. I trust only about 2 sites, period. I have also disabled (prompt only) java actions and regularly refuse to allow them to operate. If I can't see the site without it I don't look at the site. Getting cranky in my second half century! ;)

If you have any other programs similar please post them so we can all get this excrement off of our systems.

Do you have your active X set to trusted sites/prompt ???

and it looks like the remover programs keep missing the .exe of the bug/spyware...

do a file search for it and remove it manually.

I my self dont use the self extracting programs. I always look up the offender at the microtrend/pc-cillin , or the symantec site . then i regedit/manually remove them.

Sorry, I meant to say active x protocals. I have them either disabled or prompt for signed safe sites. I don';t know the name of the .exe software or I'd have deleted it before :) Only resource I have at this time are the 3 programs earlier listed. I expect to change over to XP very soon depending on finances. (Been out of work for 2 weeks since no planes to work on.)

New development. I still have the damned redirect infection after 3 software loadings to scan and get rid of it. I guess it will only be cured with a full format.

one other thing .. be shure your unplugged from your modem when doing this .. there's several of the types of bugs that keep you linking up just to keep there stuff on your pc.

you can also try one of the online virus scans ... remember virus scans seldom work on a running program though.

it will probely take an ''regedit" to find it though

It's been said we have three brains, one cobbled on top of the next. The stem is first, the reptilian brain; then the mammalian cerebellum; finally the over developed cerebral cortex.  They don't work together in awfully good harmony - hence ax murders, mobs, and socialism.

Maverick, do you use the "check for updates" Ad-Aware feature regulary? They have new reference files almost every week.

regedit can be a pain in the tail unless you know exactly what to look for /were to go ... fdisk and reformat is faster .. lol
