Found some pics of a P-40 that I would like to know a bit more about.  I know that it is Aussie and more than likely based on Morotai during the war.  Trying to find out more as to unit and possible color of the markigns for skinning. Thanks.  <S>

From these pics, the flashing on the cowl looks black and the spinner painted white.  Maybe like the P-40 at the end?

This is a artists rendering.  Not sure how accurate it is.

Dan still pops in to check the boards from time to time.

Skuzzy, could you please move this over to the Skinners forum?  I think Dan would find it quicker there.  Also, a few of the skinners may have links for more info on it.  Would make a beauty of a skin for the 40 drivers.

Here you go not the same plane but possibly the same squadron? Also this one has some nose art.
Also a number of RAAF training squadrons used bare metal P-40'S. Looking at the terrain around the planes I don't think the pictures were taken in Australia.

The P40 in the RAF markings is a surviving P40.  The story of that bird is kind of amazing as it was bought surplus after the war and taken back to a guys farm and has survived ever since.  It's one of the most original P40s in existance.

His son has a website about it here:

Thanks for the info Dan.  One quick question.  Is the paint scheme that it is in now a WWII period paint job or is it post war?  I wanted to skin it, but all of the pics in the aluminum paint scheme are post war pics from what I can tell by looking at the vehicles sitting next to it.  Didn't know if it carried that livery in WWII. Thanks and <S>!!

It was in comoflage during it's operational time.  It wasn't stripped of paint until it's wartime career was over.

I think it is most likely the paint scheme on the RAAF P-40's it had during the war. The only question would be was it an OTU aircraft that was possibly? used only for training & was stationed overseas post war meaning it never was used in combat & then not be able to qualify. I still think you would be safe though on any of the RAAF planes.

My first thought is that these are OTU birds after their operational service.  You see lots of Spit Vcs stripped of paint at that point too with the RAAF.  I can't give a definative answer yet, but will keep looking

If that is the Canuck P-40 I'm thinking of, it was stripped of paint for a war bonds drive.
It was then sold surplus after the war ended.  I'd scan a picture but I'm moving in less than
a week and it's just not worth the hassle :)
