smoke bombs
« on: December 01, 2011, 11:34:19 PM »
I remember watching a show (true story) where in vietnam there was a rescue mission for a downed pilot, after the rescuers found the pilot they made their way down a river dressed as fishermen in a sanpam. they got ambushed by some VC and called an A-1 skyraider for CAS. he dropped smoke bombs from his plane to cover the escape. saw it 3 or 4 years ago so I dont remember what pilot it was
so I figured I'd do some research to see when they started dropping smoke bombs from planes. heres what i found

http://www.lexpev.nl/downloads/aircraftsmokebombs1945.pdf

the date on the manual is 28 Nov. 1945. shows specs of the cluster bombs, some that were launched from ships and tanks and airplanes.

uses

1)smoke up a town to cover troops running to map room.
2)smoke up a vbase so the flakers cant see too well.
3)smoke up a tank spawn;cover a retreating tank
4)smoke up your own runway to cover planes taking off (in case of vulch situation) of course the plane that drops the smoke bomb would have to come from a different airfield or have made it up.

The Beaufighter used some smoke rockets of some sort for marking targets or positions, I dont remember what theater or exactly the details.

The best example of aircraft using smoke would be the bird dog scouts/FO's, as in the little L9 grasshopper, storch, lysander aircraft. Etc.  I think it'd be a god thing to add, but a lot more info will be needed to sway HTC.

been asked many times as a way to mark gv's.   i would rather mark them with either rockets of 500 lb bombs, but i guess it would be cool for instances like today when we when to ava and according ava rules of entanglement we couldnt shot/bomb/rocket any gv's.

so a +1

Also in WWII they had smoke generators that could be mounted to aircraft.  You fly along low putting out a wall of smoke.

Why wouldn't I just drop a real bomb on my target?  You know, skip the middleman :D

drop a bomb on planes trying to kill troops? goodluck with your b29 dropping 80 100 pound bombs on the town attempting to kill the airplanes strafing troops.

or have 2 guys drop 2 smoke bombs near the troops route to map room to cover.

endless uses IMO

nope. u say "why dont i just drop a bomb"

i say "drop a smoke bomb over the town to cover troops running"

in order to cover troops running to map room with a bomb you'd have to bomb the airplanes. best way to do that would be to drop the most bombs as u can (B-29)
