Airspeed AS.51 Horsa
« on: October 11, 2012, 12:40:59 PM »
This one will get shot down in flames, and I'm not sure it's even do-able, but if you don't ask, you don't get the flak.

Okay, even I can't give you pro's over what's already in the game, except you could perhaps land a GV or more troops.

As a test of pilot skills and co-operation it's probably unmatched and would be good fun to try and get one to ground without being beaten up, assuming you survive take off and transit behind your buddy in the Lancaster.  I've flown glider's on aerotow, and it's good fun but hard work!  Would love to try one of these big beasties.

If you think glider's aren't good fun, try taking mossie's out of the DA high alt bases and dogfighting deadstick! :O Spits fly like a brick in comparison.

Looking forward to being shot down in flames! (Not unusual if anyone has seen me flying)

Just a thought - guess you could have an aerial sporn point x miles and xkft from target to just sporn the glider.

Its not a bad idea, but it would require a new pre-takeoff joining system.

Are you thinking along the lines of a mission?  Someone assigns as Tug, someone as Glider and someone as GV if that option is taken?  Or minus tug if you sporn directly to location and alt?

why not make it air-spawn at V spawns?

It spawns at 5K

Glides down to destination and discharges what it needs to discharge.

It has no power so its a one use thing, you only get one chance to get it right, its range and effectiveness depends totally on skill.

It wouldn't be overpowered because, as its not a vehicle goon, it would be classed as a plane and hence visible from 6K away, and with no power or armament, is an easy kill unless defended or base is shut down.

^^^ That would be a lot of fun.

I agree.  +1 on this.

Sounds good to me too.  Heaven knows why I had a mental block on "Spawn" - sorry guys.  Would be nice to know if HTC had any thoughts on this idea?  It would be totally unique within the game, and I guess any game?

I just recently had posted something about adding gliders to the game I too think it would be a fun thing maybe have the joiner as a gunner in ur bomber/lancs until you cut them loose, my thought was maybe make them invisible to radar similar to the effect that gv,s have till they are on target and shooting that way you could tow them to the radar ring then cut them loose and let them glide into position with troops and gv or something like that.
I personally +1 this idea

Although around three to four times the number of Horsa's were built, between 3,799 and approximately 5,000 Horsas when production ended.  To be honest I didn't realise so many were built!  Some fantastic videos on youtube, including one showing the "snatch" recovery method.  And I thought winch launches were hairy!

Gliders would be cool, towed out behind a C47.  However the glider would have to have twice the payload of the transport to make it worthwhile (else, why not just take 2 C47s?)  Aerotow isn't a huge challenge though, once you're used to it.

this is actually an easy problem to solve....simple..........make any glider towed by an aircraft(c47) in this case. not show up on radar, not flash the base when in radar until it has been disconnected and the c-47 can not land with the glider,it must detach and land on its own.   payload would be the same 10 troops or supplies.  the danger is being slow and unarmed and totally at the mercy of everyone else...including the storch.   advantage of try it? stealth.   real life advantage of gliders...???  STEALTH    you need two pilots to participate, one to fly the goon, one to fly the glider. the goon can not have any cargo  if radar is down at the base, and there are gv's flashing it. you would be able to get close to map room without a darbar, this would be great at remote bases. detach.....dar bar now shows(and if base was not flashing,it now does) land the glider, open door, release troops when on ground(no air drops)  and possible base capture, or stealth resupply of vehicles or base.
