Someone who knows, why do they need a new oxygen system for this plane? They seem to have one that works for the F-4, F-5, F-8, F-14, F-15, F-16, F/A-18, AV-8B, etc, etc. What gives?

They're trying to move to systems that generate the oxygen from high pressure bleed air from the engines. Cryogenic and pressurized oxygen tanks are a huge safety problem both in the aircraft and on the airbase. The systems have been in development and use for at least 20 years.

Doright is correct. On the F-35 we have pretty much the same system.

While such a system may be cheaper and saves weight and space, it's also much riskier. See the problems with civil aircraft reported every year with the Boeing 787 as the first jetliner moving to an independent system.

Lots of fires, explosions, death & mayhem, due to the liquid oxygen storage & transfer. We lost several F-111's armed & ready on the pad from a faulty ground rod & cable while loading LOX.  :salute

Here is something you'll never hear a engineer claim. "I designed the oxygen system for the f-22" Why you swingin'..why you swingin'!?!?
