OK graphics card???
« on: October 29, 2003, 11:54:04 AM »
As of now I have a 32mb integrated graphics card in my computer and I am able to run any game I have played so far (excluding AH2).  I am thinking of buying a nVIDIA FX5200 128Mb DDR , 8X AGP, DVI/TV-out card and was wondering if it's even worth the $60 to  buy it.  I understand that pretty much anything is going to be better than what I have now, but was just wanting some opinions of some more technical  people.  I am not into games enough to see myself spending too much over $100.  Any info on this card will be appreciated.  Thanks

Old info, but for the price range you're looking at, valid:

http://www.tomshardware.com/graphic/20030120/index.html  (note that the radeon 9600Pro is roughly equivalent to the 9500Pro, performs a bit worse in some areas, a bit better in others)

For 149.00 at http://www.newegg.com:

Sapphire Atlantis ATI RADEON 9600 PRO 128MB 8X AGP DVI/TV BULK

For about 110.00-125.00 - Get the Radeon9600 (non-pro) or the GeForce FX5600

Typically at equivalent price levels, the ATIs run better than the GeForces when you start throwing DX9 stuff at the cards.  The newer GF FX5700 actually finally holds its own at its targeted price level (radeon9600Pro level - 150-200 bucks) according to the review sites, but I haven't seen any cards for sale yet.

For *just* under 100 bucks at Newegg - SAPPHIRE TECHNOLOGY LIMITED ATI OEM RADEON 9500 64MB DDR 8X AGP BULK

Better than the GF FX5200 by a long shot.  ITs only downside is that its only 64 MB memory instead of 128.  Shouldn't affect you for the games you would be playing for the working life of the card - at least, not until better cards come along that you'd need to get anyway.  :)

All IMO, as always - YMMV

thanks for the quick reply!!!  I ended up buying a ATI Radeon 9200 128mb from a friend instead of the FX5200.  Thanks for the info though.
