This place seems like a fountain of knowledge so I thought I would ask if anyone has advice on meat grinders.

I have been asked by the guys in my hunting camp to get a GOOD meat grinder. I don't want a cheap home type that won't last doing 400 to 500 pounds a year of game but I also don't want (need) a commercial type i.e. Hobart for 2500 bucks or so.

I am eyeing the 3/4 hp grinder in the Cabelas for $369 as it has a cast iron feed neck and is made in Italy.

I found a few on E-bay but I cant find anything about them.

Does anyone use a grinder on game and if so what luck have you had?

This will be used on game and we want it to last. I am splitting the cost so we are looking to speed around 400 to 500 on one.

I don't have any advice about meat grinders, but I can't stop staring at your avatar.

A twin engine prop plane does a good job.

you could kill 2 birds with one stone.

get your wife a nice pro-quality kitchen-aid, the 525 watt lists for about $425 but I bought the wife a reconditioned one (with full waranty) at an outlet mall for $249.

it has a PTO socket on it that will run a meat grinder ($65), and you can get the sausage making kit for another $15. plus they run a dozen or so other attachments.

it'll last forever, made of metal not plastic.

the big benifit is you spend 250-400 (depending on how lucky you are shopping) on the wife, making you the hero. and then only spend $65 on hunting. making you generous and possably deserving of spending some cash on yourself (like a new gun).

where if you where to spend the same money and just get a meat grinder to use hunting, that would be added to the mental list of money you spend on hunting instead of her.

btw- it's the wierdest thing, and I wouldn't believe it if I hadn't seen it many times with my own eyes. women will brag up these things as if it where something important like a new boat, gun, or video card.

You get what you pay for.

Look for a model that is motor driven with a decent sized motor.

Also look for a model that you can add accessory's to. IE a sausge stuffer on the output.

What sizes of dies & cutters does it come with and how available are replacements?

With all due respect Capt, when you're grinding up a couple animals, that one is a wee bit small to do the job IMO. You want one that can old 4-5 lbs. in the chute. (Like a butchers shop, but slightly smaller). My step brother has one of these larger ones but I haven't a clue what brand it is, the unit is a 1960's one.

ya, you'd have to feed it almost constantly I'm guessing our grinder tray holds about 3 pounds. works great though, lots of power.

I haven't seen anything like the big old metal monster like we had when I was a kid, for sale anywhere. it was probably 15 years old when I was born.

the main downside to the kitchen-aid is that if you get it you'll start gaining wieght. ever since I bought it for my wife the oven is baking something all winter long.

Thanks Capt. but this tool is staying at camp and we bake no bread at camp only easy man food (lazy bunch no one wants to cook)
