But in 1981, Canada's Gilles Villeneuve and his Ferrari 126 CK turbo beat a F-104 jet fighter over a kilometre (two-thirds of a mile) at Istrana airport in northern Italy.

How is this possible?

I guess they all forgot how much more a plane weighs.....Send in a motorcycle on a short run and then they'll call it unfair cause it's lighter.....

I think what will make this race interesting is the fact that its over 3 different distances.  I give the nod to the race car in the short distance, with the Typhoon winning the longer distance.  It takes a little longer for a jet engine to produce forward thrust, but when it does, whoa nelly!

Car has more horsepower at low speeds.  Power = Thrust times Speed.

Fastest Car: Thrust SSC Black Rock Nevada, 1997,  763 mph and change: Mach 1.02 +/-

SR 71: Mach 3.5 +
----------------
As far as acceleration, Top fuel dragster, 0-300 mph in 4.9 sec

F 14 Tomcat: 0-140 kts in 1.? seconds.

(the Tomcat cheats)

Top fuellers are down in the 4.5's now at around 330.  Claim to be producing 7,000+ hp.

As jets take time to spool up (several seconds) I wonder if you could somehow tie down the 104 and lets it get to max thrust and into after-burner (reheat for our friends in the U.K.) first then (hehe) cut the rope, so to speek.

It's just that the car gets it's power to the ground right now, if you could wet the strip with some soapy water that would be interesting.

Try this on say a five mile course and car is toast I dont care what kind of car.  Now I wonder what the rate of V delta was when Yeager took the V-1 off from the ground that time for the speed and climb from ground record.

Anytime the 104 is used I think it's cool even if they use it for a planter, I love that plane.:aok

I've seen 4.79, and 320, didn't realize they added another 10 mph and shaved off .2 sec past that.

They pull like 6 g's average for the quarter mile.  Gotta be the most violent controlled experience available.:aok

handsomehunk race.  Why don't they race to see which one can start it's engine faster, or who can strap in faster?  That would be just as useful.  I could probably out accellerate an F-104 on foot for the first 10 feet.

From the NHRA website:

Quote
Schumacher covered the distance in the U.S. Army dragster in a career-best time of 4.512 seconds at 326.16 mph to giving him top honors in Top Fuel for the first time this season and the fifth time in his career.

Recent airshow here in NZ they did a standing start race between a Pitts Special,Hughes 500 helicopter,Porsche GT-2 race car (something like 750bhp) and a stock Yamaha FZ1.

Race was length of runway, turn and  back to the other end for the finish.

As far as acceleration, bike won easy though once (roughly)200kph was hit the Porsche started to pull away though was quickly overtaken by the Helicopter.

When they reached the end of the runway Pitts was ahead, did a fast 180 in verticle, dived back down and was gone back to the start (showing off slightly while inverted) and winning easily. Followed by the helicopter slightly behind, the Porsche and then the bike.

Of course if they'd used a GSX-R 1000, it wouldn't of been a fair contest :D
