Locks Up
« on: November 07, 2003, 01:03:25 AM »
Ah keeps freezing and locking up my system. This usually happens around CV high ack when the shells explode, but has happened in normal flight. It locks the keyboard and forces me to reboot. I have latest drivers for everything. Any suggestions?

Athlon 1Ghz
pcchips m810 moboard
512 pc133 ram
GeForce 3ti 200
AC'97 4Ch Codec onboard sound

Latest NVidia drivers will cause problems with that video card.  Roll back to 30.82.  You will also need to reinstall DirectX after the rollback as the latest NVidia drivers appear to be messing with some DirectX registry parameters.

I would also be willing to bet you have some shared IRQ's with that AC97 sound controller, which will cause problems.

OK, I have 30.82 installed and checked for IRQ conflicts and found none. It's still locking up. It seems to happen when CV ack is firing. Is there a setting on the Nvidia controls to smooth that out? My framerates look decent at 45 +/-. My card is a VisionTek Xtasy 6564, AGP, 64mb DDR 400mhz, 175mhz core, GeForce 3 ti200. Shouldn't that be enough card to run AH smoothly at 1024 x 768?

Yes it is.  Something is causing a conflict.  Did you look at each IRQ, or did you use the "IRQ Conflct" option/list?  The "IRQ Conflict" list/option does not mean anything anymore.  XP/2K will not show any conflicts at all, even if 5 devices are using the same IRQ.
It very well could be the AC97 controller.  These controllers are pretty much all software based and take up a lot of resources, but it still sounds too much like IRQ's are being shared between either the sound card and/or the video card.

I checked each one individually (don't know how to pull up the list). It is on IRQ3 by it's self. I'm running Win98 and checked thru Control Panel>System. The onboard sound has an SiS chipset, don't know what I can do with that, if anything. The only thing I have'nt updated is the board bios and looking from the release notes theres nothing new that would affect me.

OK, I figured out how to pull up the list and it looks like I have a couple shared IRQ's. Gotta forgive me, I'm not much of a computer whiz. Which should I change, and to what IRQ?? Thanks.
