Author Topic: P4 3.0 GHz or XP1700+ at 2.2Ghz (Read 589 times)

I currently have an XP1700+ running at 2.2Ghz but I have an oppurtunity to get a P4 .0 GHz with Hyper-Threading Technology and an 800 MHz FSB Intel D865GBF Motherboard, with XP Pro for $199. Will I see a huge difference b/t my XP1700+ vs the P4 3.0Ghz? I am going to by the bundle b/c its such a good deal. My question is should I just keep what I have (XP1700) or sell it to my buddy and upgrade to the P4? I use the computer mainly for gaming.

Hmm, good question. I'd say the P4 would be a bit faster overall, but at 2.2 GHz the Athlon would probably equal it for gaming. The 3200+ AMD runs at 2.2 GHz true clockspeed, but has 256kB extra cache than the 1700+ Tbred. The FSB is also 400 MHz versus the 1700+ stock speed of 266 MHz. (I don't know what speed you have the FSB set to.) I'd say a Tbred at 2.2 GHz would probably equal about a 2.8 GHz P4 overall.

Regardless, that's definately a good deal! (Don't forget you need DDR400 memory for the 'C' type P4s for top performance.)

Hell ya its a good deal. XP pro sells at best buy for 299.99 for the fresh install and 199.99 for the upgrade. Anyway, download DR Hardware benchmark test and it shows the results from a number of different computers in a number of different categories and you can compare your system with the others that are on file. It seems to imply that a p4 2.6 w HT thouroulghy out performs the athlon 1800. But i may be interpreting the data incorrectly.

I have the FSB of my XP1700+ set at 200 on the motherboard and have PC3000(is that DDR400?) if I have to go out and buy memory I'll probably just let my friend have it. Are Intel made motherboards any good?

If the FSB is at 400 and the true clockspeed is 2.2 GHz, it's going to be a pretty even match with the P4 rig.

Intel branded motherboards are not made by Intel. They are outsourced to a lot of different manufacturers. In the past Intel has used Gigabyte, FIC, and DFI to make their boards. Typically Intel branded boards lack any significant overclocking or tweaking options of any kind and are not quite as fast as other boards. They are, however, typically extremely stable.

PC3200 is DDR400. (I'm assuming the PC3000 might be a typo.)

Whitehawk, an Athlon XP 1800+ runs at a true clockspeed of 1533 MHz and uses a 266 MHz (effective) FSB. A 2.6 GHz 'C' type P4 would definately outperform that CPU. The 1700+ typically runs at 1466 MHz on a 266 MHz FSB, but this one is overclocked a lot to 2200 MHz on a 400 MHz FSB. It would significantly outperform a 2.6 GHz 'C' type P4 at the overclocked settings. About the closest stock CPU would be the original 2800+ model, which was a 333 MHz FSB 2.25 GHz CPU. Since this 1700+ is using a 400 MHz FSB it should be a bit faster than the original 2800+ was.

How do you get a 266 mobo to run at 400!!?? Do you keep it in liquid Nitrogen?

FSB is 200 which equates to 400bus, nope I have it air cooled, its DL3TC stepping which has an insane amount of overhead in terms of overclocking. Some guy have got the chip to over 3ghz with liquid cooling. Bloom PC3000 isnt a typo, I am using HyperX PC3000

Did you already take the Retail edge tests and submit your request for the deal? If not, you are far to late, the Kits sold out in 6 hours after the offer went live. :-(

BTW it really is a great deal ... mine is on the way!!

PC3000 memory would be rated to run at 187.5 MHz. It doesn't surprise me you got it to 200 MHz.
