Anyone know where I can get spare parts for Maxtor hard drives? A chip on the board attached to my 40GB ATA100 developed a wart that let out some critical magic smoke. The drive has some data I'd like to have back. I've got it replaced, but still...

It seems as if its just the one chip and I may end up seeing what I can do with it but it would be much simpler to just replace the board.

If you have broadband, that porn can be replaced in a matter of a few hours. If not there are some companies that can do it for you, and prolly cheaper than replacing the part.

Lizard, chances are the "wart" failed because of other cascading events. Replace the failed component and the new one will probably fail.

If you're serious about data recovery, I read an article about a data recovery company - it's been 6 months or so, but I (sorta) recall in the neighborhood of $500 for a situation like yours.

that "one smoked part" was probly caused by another part thats shorted out ... just replacing the smoked (burned out component) ussually doesnt work . If its critical Data that you just have to have then i would try sending it in for recovery .. Beshure you explain the state of the hd befor hand.

Try ebay and see if you can find the same model HD. It'll probably be cheap (it's a HD), and is probably worth a shot to just swap out the circuitboard. I'd see how easy it is to remove the current one first though.

Looks like 4 screws and a couple solder connections. No sweat. Yeah, that proly will be my best bet.

From what I understand fellas, data recovery can be very expensive and its not that important. I'm sure the recovery would work much better if the disc's were actually turning, but this chip with the offending wart is I believe in the motor drive circuitry. If as you'uns say its a cascade and not simply a failed component then replacing the whole board ought fix the cascade eh?

Wonder why they don't just sell the little freakin boards? Ah, they want you to buy a NEW drive!

Most of us have 5 or 6 hard drives stuck in boxes somewhere, drives we no longer use. Why not post the drive model in the hardware bbs and inquire if anyone has a drive they will sell or give you?

And just incase anyone in here has one to get rid of, It was a Maxtor 40GB ATA100 7200rpm. Model # is 5T040H4. Thanks fer the suggestions.

i have a maxtor 5200 40 ata100 40 gig that died, but not due to the board. If i can find that ill let you know.
