La5 - give it a try?
« on: November 10, 2003, 10:18:29 AM »
I wonder why the La5 doesn't get flown more?

La7 6603 5.52% of kills (#4) / 5905 4.93% of Deaths (#3)
La5 1177 0.98% of Kills (#22) / 802 0.67% of Deaths (#22)

(http://www.innomi.com/ahkillstats/totalstats.php ranks counting only fighters this tour so far)

I was trying out La7 got bored and decided I wanted to try and make some perks in a new plane.  So I figured I would try the La5 and I have not gotten out of it much since.

o  Same Std Weapons Load 2 Shvaks (sp?) 200 rpg
o  Better Handling (especially slow)
o  Very fast (Soda's write-up  says 5 mph slower than La7)
o  ENY 40

This is another one of those planes like 205 you don't see so much but is a really great performing aircraft.  I think it might be one of the best all around planes in game, certainly I would say of the ENY 40 group.

Consider giving it a try, it is a lot of fun to fly.  Variety is good and you will make a whole heck of a lot more perks in it than a La7.

It's a bit one dimensional, just a low-alt crotch-rocket.  The La-7 is a better ride for people looking for that kind of plane.

Im wondering why you would say that.

The -7 has only two advantages.

-Slightly faster
-3x20mm option

The speed issue is a non factor for me because I dont make it habbit to run.  Also,  if I do need to disengauge the -5 is still plenty fast enough to get outa dodge.

The extra 20mm is a considerable advantage.  However I feel that it is negated by the -5s far superior low speed handling.  I smile everytime im in a -5 and I come across a -7.

The 2 issues that bother me about the -5 is no DT and poor ballistics from the cannons.

It is without a doubt an absolute monster below 10k

In almost any aircraft I fly I would much rather fight a -7 over a -5

Found this at netsces.......

Power is not really a problem with the La5FN, it is so small and light at 7,400lbs that the 1,800+ hp it has is more than enough.  Top speed at sea-level is 336mph, 356mph with WEP, a solid statement of speed and more than enough to out-distance itself from the better turners in the game.  The engine really sings though at around 9K where it can make 379mph while cruising.  Engine power drops above  9K though and never really improves, making it a low altitude fighter.  Most fights in AH are low, or tend to end up low quickly anyway.  Climb rate is also impressive,  up to 4,500ft/minute at 4K, though again over about 7K this starts to deteriorate rapidly.   At best altitude, around 9K, the La5FN is only 5 mph slower than it's very popular brother the La7.  Acceleration is incredible, beat only by the La7 and 109G10 at sea level (excluding perk planes).  Fuel duration is somewhat poor, only 28 minutes with no option for drop tanks.  Range is not bad though as the high low level cruise speeds can really get you a long distance.  Also, WEP time is very long, over 9 minutes, so running around with WEP use is not really an issue as you will almost never run out.

Not flown either very much - but this is a more apt description of the La7,  the La5 has low speed capabilities that surprise many without sacrificing much high end performance.  In my mind the La5 is a superiour plane to the La7 because it is more balanced - but oddly it is the La7 that commonly gets the "dweeb" tag.  If more people flew it this would change rapidly though:

This tour so far:
The La-5FN has 68 kills and has been killed 65 times against the La-7.
Last Tour:
The La-5FN has 446 kills and has been killed 310 times against the La-7.

The La-5FN has 99 kills and has been killed 70 times against the P-51D.
The La-7 has 676 kills and has been killed 528 times against the P-51D.

The La-5FN has 16 kills and has been killed 5 times against the P-51B.
The La-7 has 63 kills and has been killed 64 times against the P-51B.

The La-5FN has 87 kills and has been killed 72 times against the N1K2.
The La-7 has 362 kills and has been killed 404 times against the N1K2.

The La-5FN has 98 kills and has been killed 85 times against the Spitfire Mk IX.
The La-7 has 411 kills and has been killed 482 times against the Spitfire Mk IX.

forgot to add (and this is the best part):

La5 ENY of 40
La7 ENY of 15

I misquoted/misrecalled Soda's words:

Preaching to the choir here, I am afraid.  My favorite kill in an La5 is another La5.

Its does well at alt as well, just takes awhile to get up to speed.

I try to stick to planes with a "5" in them.  I cheat with the F4u-1a, F4u-1d and F4u-1c cause the 4+1=5.  But the most fun the past few tours has been in an La5.

I've had many tours that were mostly la5, c-205 and 190-a5.  All three are great rides.

I suspect the c-205 is the most underrated ride in AH.

Been using it for sometime now to drop the proverbial Baby Ruth bar in the pool for incoming NOE raids. It can be a real beast in that role.

Flown the La-5 quite a bit a few months ago. I think it is probably the best knife fighter in the game... bar none. Only real problem is those awful cannon.

It has speed, maneuverability, acceleration, can climb, dive, doesn't compress too quickly, decent views (save for the canopy rails but an experienced pilot can look around them) and can take a few hits. If it would have 6 or even 4 0.50's and could carry a DT I would probably fly little else. But then there's always the P-51B :D

Yip, more lifetime kills in the La5 than any other plane.  Haven't flown it in a while.  Great ride.

I don't know about the rest of you guys but I enjoy killing the La-5 just as much as the La-7.  One good thing though when encountering a La-5 as opposed to a La-7 is that I don't have to chase the La-5 as far before I shoot it down.

La-5 is a great perk producer.  Because it's not seen that often, many pilots assume that's because it is inferior, so they underestimate it and die.

The "Lavochka" is quite fast and manuverable, with a nasty sting and good ammo load.  Only drawbacks are so-so high altitude performance and short range.

Another good thing about the La-5:  no one will call you a dweeb for flying one.

One more thing:  the bottle of vodka under the seat is empty.  It's there for you to pee in.
