Here's a good site with more info:
 http://www.radarworld.org/

BTW, can anyone find a picture where radar coverage extended out of one country into another?  ;)

Westy,

Chain home radar stations in England detecting bomber formations after take off in France. Bombers were detected shortly after take off and formating over enemy held land. After direction of approach was determined the defending fighters were scrqambled with enough time to get to altitude to intercept.

Is that good enough for ya?

DEFINITION OF A VETERAN
A Veteran - whether active duty, retired, national guard or reserve - is someone who, at one point in their life, wrote a check made payable to "The United States of America", for an amount of "up to and including my life."

No. Not really.  What showed up on WWII era radar was a blip. A spike in a sine wave on a small oscilloscope screen which indicated targets. If the IFF worked it indicated targets may be or include friendlies. It did not track formations unerringly from takeoff to target. The radar blip was basic and there was more done analytically by the control centers to guess and counter what they saw instead of just follwing the dots to target and vectoring in the F15 and F__er, Spitfires or 109's. WWII radar could not tell exactly how many and it could not differentiate every enemy from every friendly in that blip.

Actually, PPI screens (what everybody thinks of when they think "radar screen") entered the Chain Home system in 1940, according to this page.

I just had an idea about the radar.  A lot of the complaints come from people that like to do long range bombing raids and are irritated that their specific location is pinpointed from the moment they are in indian country. Maybe we could have the bombers carry chaff (aluminum strips dropped along the way).  This was historically done in WW2 to jam radar by bombers. It could stop dot dar from identing the bombers that are using it.  The strength radar could still show enemy in sector so bombing raids wouldnt be too easy.  Just an idea.
