I recently bought one of those sony dream systems he mentions in the article. Hard to imagine a single speaker system coming close.
Here we put salt on Margaritas, not sidewalks.

For real surround sound you need a set of Bose 901s in the front, Bose 501s in the rear, and a monster subwoofer under the couch :)

Any surround sound system that relies on software or some kind of gimmick to replicate what 6 speakers does is not worth the money.  For $600 you can get a very capable 6 speaker system with a dolby digital receiver.
