"Victory At Sea" - any good?
« on: November 14, 2003, 12:21:12 PM »
AandE/History Channel has "Victory at Sea" on DVD for $72.  They'll throw in a mousepad for free, and if I can push the bill over $75 they'll ship my order for free, too.

So has anyone seen an episode of "Victory at Sea" and is it any good?

Description here.

Its been on TV numerous times. The cinematography is excellent, and the story telling while pretty biased is very good... but the best part of all is the music. Incredible!

I remember loving it when I was in elementary/middle school.  My dad walked in one day while I was watching it, and told me that he remembered loving it when he was young.

In one of the sidebars I see that they offer a cd of the music for $12.

In your opinion, is the DVD set worth $72?  Or is this something I'll watch once and shelve?

$72 seems a little steep to me. Maybe worth 40ish.

I think the price may be a bit high, but "Victory at Sea" is a classic.  At the time it came out it was considered a masterpiece.

Use to watch it all the time with my Dad.  I agree with MRPLUTO; it's a classic that every WWII buff should have in their collection.

Victory at Sea was made by NBC. While it is filmed in B&W, I dare anyone to find a better WW2 documentary series.:aok

About 40 years ago there was a tv documentary series called "The Big Picture."  It has been so long since I've seen it that I can't really remember much about it.  I do remember that I was fascinated by it at the time.  Any of you old farts know anything concrete about it?  Wonder if it is available anywhere on vhs.
