Never seen a question go unanswered here.. Please help the digitally challenged.

How do I transfer a VHS movie to a digital file on the puter? I'd like to make it an MPG. Anyone ? Please ? (For my son's business website.)

I'm pretty sure you need a video capture device, like for a camera, so you could connect the vcr to the computer. The software in that would (should) let you convert to mpeg file.

You need a tv tuner card or a vidio card with a vidio in plug and a lot of free space.

yeah, there are "Video Capture" cards out there and TV tuner ones. Depends on what you need. Read up on the varying qualities of each. Then, when you've done some research, and know exactly what you need, come here and we'll tell you why it's a piece of junk.

You need a video card that can handle it,as others have suggested.

ATI cards are very good for this type of deal.

A different way provided you got the gear:

Connect the analog A/V out of your VHS VCR to the analog A/V input port of a Sony DV Cam (most of them have those). Record the contents of the VHS to the MiniDV tape.

Then connect the Sony Cam to the PC via the Firewire port and there you have it, you can use any program you want (Ulead Videostudio, Adobe Premiere, or even MS Movie Maker) to capture/edit the contents.

I would say the same as the above, except swap "sony" for "canon"

The only problem with moviemaker is that it ONLY puts out .WMV files, and not MPGs or any other widely used format other than the uncompressed AVI.

But, its easy to use, and free.
