That is some serious sht there. jeezus crimany.  Remember Aces ove Europe?  I loved that game.
I guess the next logical step is going to be virtual reality in combat sims.  The graphics are getting almost better than reality.

That is what I'm waiting for.  Imagine seeing things in high res binocular with peripheral vision, and being able to actually move your head to see in any given direction, 360 deg.

I beg to differ.  I'd say we're already past being better than reality:  I've slammed my P38 into the ground more times than I can count, yet I still walk away every time.  :D

Aren't we attempting to MODEL reality?  How can you surpass something that doesn't seem to have anything beyond?  Hehe, are we talking of flight sims + shrooms/acid? :D

Reality is the limit.  You'll never reach reality until ya can't walk away from your virtual wreck :)

I stand by my previous statement.  When it's exactly like WWII combat, and yet I can log off and walk away at any time, that's fantasy surpassing reality.

As it is, it's close enough for me.

FB uses trilinear shading vs AH bi-linear. Until someone figures out how to use trilinear for 500+ player games we won't see the level of reality of FB in AH.

FB is fine for small groups, but fails miserably in large arenas. But it surpasses AH in reality (both in flight model and graphics) by a huge margin.

OK..start the debate. :D

While we wait for VR goggles....

You should check out TrackIR2

Yeah, I've used something like that in a lab environment (not flight-sim related).  It's kinda nifty, but I think in this case half-measures are worse than no measures.

You are quite incorrect NHawk.  The choice of trilinear or bilinear filtering is not up to the application.  That is determined by DirectX and the video card driver.
There is no trilinear or bilinear choice in DirectX.

Hmmm...

Why does most new games let me choose from bi, trilinear and sometimes anisotropic filtering?
All this within the game setup dialogs.
The new Nvidia drivers can be set to let the application determine the various filtering and antialiasing settings.

Now I'm confused...

Anistrophic filtering is available as a filter option in DirectX.

You can't really force trilinear at all.  Mipmap transitions is the only place it is available as an option and those are special cases.

Here are the exact texture filter options available in DirectX.

D3DTEXF_NONE
D3DTEXF_POINT
D3DTEXF_LINEAR
D3DTEXF_ANISOTROPIC
D3DTEXF_FLATCUBIC
D3DTEXF_GAUSSIANCUBIC

The linear texture state gives the option to the video driver and hardware to determine if trilinear or bilinear is to be used.

Games that provide an option for trilinear filtering can only do so for mipmap transitions.  Or they are using a proprietary hook into the video card driver.  Or, they are using the terms to apply LINEAR versus POINT filtering, which are very different.

Yes, you can set a video card driver's filter options as that is where the decision is made as to what level of filtering will be available when the application asks for LINEAR filtering.

I think you may have misunderstood what I was saying..

If I'm not mistaken, OpenGL (which FB uses) supports setting bilinear and trilinear filters.
