Pfunk, go easy on me man. That was only my second time off roading. Atleast mine goes off road. I couldn't get pictures of the rougher stuff because of the close quarters and by that time pouring rain. Sir, you can think it's nothing more all you want but until you can slap some proof on the table I'm gonna go with my limited experience in one. Besides the H1 it's my opinion that the H2 is the most capable machine you can drive off a dealership lot stock.

Yeah funked, according to some other guys I know, you want that tie rod to snap. Otherwise you might end up with more severe damage elsewhere.

Yep we had another guy snap his axle.  Of course he had a 350 LT-1 motor in his Jeep.  He bought a front axle that unfortunately contained mismatched parts.  So the splines were only partially in mesh, and as soon as he got to a big rock, the left front snapped.  He drove it out though.

I hate to brake it to you man. The H2 is ok. But it is far from the best factory stock 4X4.

The best factory wheel goes to this Vehicle

The 2003 Jeep Rubicon.

From the factory it comes with
31 inch mud tires.
4.11 gears.
Solid axles (this is a HUGE advantage over the IFS on your hummer)
4 wheel  disk brakes.
Dana 44 front and rear difs, with lockers for both, that are driver controlled.
More and better skid plating.
a 4 to 1 low transfer case.
Non anti lock brakes, cause they suck of road.
And I know there is more I am forgeting.
Off road on anything but sand the Ruby is going to each your lunch. Or so every review of both has said.

I was going to buy one, but the dealers wanted to much money for them and would not deal so I bought something else. Man I still want one though.

From the Pics, the 2000 wrangler I had with 31s would have had NO trouble at all on any of that. Any wrangler would give you a pretty good run for the money but the wrangler rubicon is the king.

Absolutly. Hell part of the reason I went with a 2 wheel drive Yukon over the Ruby was:   I had a trip to WA coming and the return I was going to have the GF 2 kids a 80 pound labrador, all my guns and all the lugage for the trip. It BARELY fit in the yukon, it would not have happend in the Ruby.

The Ruby is not all that good on road, the IFS on the H2 is far better for that. The Ruby is a tad under powered compared to the H2.  Like I said above the Ruby is small. You are not fitting four people in it if you plan on taking anything else.

I trust GM for build quality more then I do jeep and for relibility. Though the 2 years I owned my wrangler it had no problems other then paint bubbles.

I have loads of respect for you taking your hummer of road. They get a bad rep from the jerkoffs, like the one I worked with who loved it cause it got 12 MPG and laughed when I asked him when he was going to wheel it.   He polished it 2 times a week lol.
He was not amused when I took the comparison of a H2 and a ruby and photo copyied it and stuck it in his cube.

I still have a hankering for that damn ruby! I need to be rich!

That depends on the trails, I would put my money on a Ruby over a H1 most of the time. Simply because the Ruby will fit on the trails and the H1 will not.

The Original hummer was meant to use its axleshafts as the fuse in the suspesion from what I understand so they brake axles alot.

The ruby would give one a damn good run for the money in most places if not do better.

For the love of god, do not refer to those things as 'hummers'.  Use the real name "H2".  They are based on the Silverado pickup truck chasis, not the military vehicle.

I can seee where the ruby would have an advantage in rock cralling.
but i would still take a H1 for most off roading.

Yep Driveshafts & U-joints. Are a Jeepers best friends.  I had a buddie of mine that kep a spare set of U-Joint in his tool box for just that event.

Thankfully Jeep's are solid axles :D  Just pull the broken driveshaft and drive home. I've seen it done lots of times. But broken tie rod's I haven't seen alot of. I'd say more cut tires and bent rims are a technicality.

Acid,
I'd suggest you get a "FULL" size spare tire/wheel that matches your other tires. Best word of advice I can give you for being off road. Not sure if those come with full size or temp tire. But you don't want to drive out of the stick's with a temp on...Also every month check the air in the Spare.   (Personal experiance, never checked it only had 10lbs of air.. talk about DOH!)

My opinion would be a Jeep. The rubicon is nice, but I'd rather build up a stock wrangler for less $$$.

I drive a jeep, and I do alot of wheeling. I've been surprised numerous times where a stock YJ can get you if you try. I run with my brother's bronco club alot as well, those things surprise the hell out of me also.

Jeeps are great if you don't plan to carry too much cargo or passengers. I can carry 1 passenger and all the tools, supplies, parts I'll need. But I can't carry anything else. Thats where a fullsize comes in handy.

IMO if you plan on doing any serious wheeling you need something with a solid front axle. Most of the guys I know with IFS trucks are wanting to swap in a soild front.

If you mostly drive around town and only do light wheeling IFS is OK.

In all a Jeep is a far more capable off road vehicle than a H2. However, cargo space is limiited and road manners are lacking.

Its also better to have a beater for offroading. If it dosen't get banged up, beat up, scratched up then you need to find harder trails. I also haven't seen too many guys with nice new trucks willing put them at risk.

I've seen all kinds of crazy things on trails around here, including an 84 mustang on 38's. But I've never seen a H2 or other brand new shiny truck. Though I have seen quite a few new jeeps getting broken in the hard way.

TPI you wouldnt happen to be from the Appalachian/Lenoir, NC area?  I saw an 80s era Cadillac/Oldsmobile car on 38s with a lift-kit.

Talk about an eye-opener.  My only words were "Aint that some cheese"
