And that is very sad indeed.

good advice,  without being able to hear someones voice you can't pick up on a sarcastic tone.

unfortunately there are enough people who would have said that seriously that it isn't readily identifiable as sarcasm

This event was a well documented war crime as were a few others but for the most part does not reflect the majority of US involvement in VN. My father was a camera man during this war. He filmed alot of death and carnage on the front lines. Bacically thats what he did was film dead people as they shot at him or towards him. I dont think he was ever the same. I've heard some of stories about some of units from some people so bloody I know would never read about it any where. The books can sometimes be very tame compared to the stories. Anyways, still the VC were a bunch of murdering bastards in regards to villagers. This sort of thing was common for them. Im glad alot of VC and NVA died.

The politicians of the United States were not the first and will not be the last people to ever use their military in a fashion that is immoral. Sure those people knew what they were doing was wrong but they really didn't have a choice. They had an order to do something and they did it. I am pretty sure that those men have their regrets even now and I know that many of them probably live with the nightmares to this day..
